But either way so often a lot of frustration over game failure comes through either having to repeat non-gratifying challenges or having to divine designer intent. Sometimes it comes off as punishing someone for being left-handed, but obviously everyone is different.

It's also probably a separate issue from things like adventure game softlocks. The random justifications for certain expectations that lead to a softlock are really just unintentional design mistakes. At least I assume most aren't trying to softlock the player...
