Whew! This morning it appeared my 1984 vintage clock radio had quit; none of the controls worked and the radio wouldn’t turn on! Turns out all it needed was a cold reboot — power off/on — and IT’S BACK!

All my recent books went from hardcover to trade paperback and almost all of my backlist in mass market has now migrated to trade. The role of mass market paperbacks is now handled almost entirely by ebooks. I'm okay with this but it is the end of an era.

Last Call for Mass Market Paperbacks
After years of steady sales declines, the format will largely disappear next year.

Sunset tonight (November 23) was spectacular! It really did glow this brilliantly. Intense orange highlights on the edges of clouds to our west. I wish I’d have seen it coming because, as it was, this obscured view is all I got! Still amazing.

This morning I woke up following a strange and memorable dream. In one part, I clearly saw a wall calendar with the date March 1989. Many things happened that month in history, of course, with the most prominent probably being “The Great Québec Blackout”.

A lacy cloud pattern photographed at 10:08 tonight. Yes, tonight, by moonlight! Moon reflects sunlight so color comes across the same, if dimmer. Look closely and you’ll see a few stars shining in the blue sky space between clouds. #clouds #moonlight #nighttime

We came home from an errand this afternoon, looked out a window, and spotted a Great Blue Heron .... right there! We rarely see them on this side of the pond and never so near. What a treat. It didn't stay long after we first sighted it before casually walking down the slope toward the pond's edge.

From Seattle to Baltimore, many Americans were celebrating Monday as Indigenous Peoples Day, determined to see it as a triumph of perseverance over centuries marked by trauma. https://to.pbs.org/4n1JlK0
Some Indigenous Peoples Day events strike conciliatory tone as Trump focuses on Columbus
This is the first year Indigenous Peoples Day has state recognition in Montana, after a decade-long campaign in the state that is home to 12 federally recognized tribes.

Hi @npr.org! We worked late tonight putting together this handy pocket guide!

It doesn't address road design issues, but if we're going to educate road users, we should include drivers.

It's the size of a folded business card. Print it, fold it, put it in your wallet!

Yes, the world may aspire to vacuousness, lost souls mourn beauty, insignificance surrounds us. Then let us drink a cup of tea. Silence descends, one hears the wind outside, autumn leaves rustle & take flight, the cat sleeps in a warm pool of light. And, with each swallow, time is sublimed.-MBarbery

Among the characters appearing in my dreams last night, a mantis that could transform into a kitten! A bit shocking but it was a cute little bugger.

If it's really about revenue for roads (it won't be) then logically put road user charge on all vehicles by weight x mileage now
Apply RUC to all cars, not just some
Keep fuel excise as a pollution tax
Existing car fleet will be on road for some time yet
(And don't copy NZ)

MEDIA RELEASE:

Road User Charging must be Universal

A universal, mass × distance road user charge for would serve the same role as fuel excise. A pay-by-use system which is proportional to the impact driving has on society and infrastructure.

As a human who turns an alarming shade of boiled lobster red after roughly 17 seconds in the sun, I will not be participating in the anti-sunscreen movement, or for that matter going outside for any length of time until mid-September at the earliest
This is nuts, FAFO-level nutz. The US is already decades behind Europe in approving better sunscreen formulations. And the kook in charge of HHS won't improve that. (gift link)
