Crop and detailed ramble about the piece, because I can and will talk about homoerotic knights at length given any chance

As usual, Wreg’s sad and crying, and this piece is a continuation of ideas I laid down in Knight and Kiss of Spellbound. What I wanted to tackle here is desire, vulnerability, shame, and masculinity withing the circle of medievalism and queer.

TLDR; Shining devotion can be read as the shining metal of the armor that represents a commitment and devotion to a cause – or the shining tear droplets of a lover in emotional turmoil

Knights: Marian Bleeke in ‘Whose Middle Ages? : teachable moments for an ill-used past’ (2019) makes an interesting notion of masculinity and knighthood. While knights are often seen as a peak masculine force, their masculinity is tied to things added on them, rather than what’s under all the metal. There’s an interesting division of manhood in knight imagery, that almost sees physical and emotional vulnerability as shameful and to be hid inside a casing of metal. What separates Wreg from the others in the piece is his ease with the state of undress. His identity is not tied to the metal, but rather he seeks to strip others from it as well to connect with and to desire. What fascinates me in knights is the homo-eroticism they inhabit, and I would go forever on the topic if given chance.

Medieval masculinity: I’ve already noted some things about masculinity and shame in terms of knighthood, but I wanted to add another point to it as well separately. While homophobia – while not quite as we know it now – was present in the past, the unease I wanted to depict here wasn’t quite that. I think Murray and Gamble discuss the unease of male embodiment in medieval period (From Texts to Bodies, 2025) in a way that really stuck to me. In nutshell, due to how male desire was inherently seen as a problem to be solved and controlled, there was a noticeable unease within some men of their own inhabited masculinity. A division of ‘me’ and ‘my desire’, and the shame that came with it and to act upon it. Wreg to me has always been a man who’s comfortable with his sexuality and gender, and how he embodies it – but I wanted to showcase a setting, where his embodied desire can also be a source of uncertainty.

The ‘green’ knight: While Wreg is in the center of this piece, the true active participant is the ‘green’ knight. He can see both his lover and the knight walking past and is in action to separate the two views with the red veil. It’s unclear, if he’s ashamed to show this vulnerable side of himself to the outside – or does he wish to protect Wreg from whatever happens on the outside. He’s a man stuck between the two and seems to be hesitant to commit to either ‘side’ .

Knight and deep-set venom

Knight oc Wreg is bare chested, his armor and clothes slipping off of him, as a venomous snake is biting into his chest. Trickles of blood are visible, and he looks sorrowful. He is gripping the snake, and with his other hand he’s holding a rapier sword, its head stuck into something and bending the blade.
