OK - pie discourse - best pie story:

In 2016, we were living in Andover, in the UK. My wife was assigned as an exchange officer at the Army Air Corps base at Middle Wallop (yes, really).*

The US Army has a tradition: senior leaders, in dress uniform, serve junior troops Thanksgiving dinner.

Adding to the #PieDiscourse, they were an early form of Tupperware, used to save moisture-rich leftovers in a container with a dry outer surface.

Stored in cold areas, a thick pie crust could keep perishables fresh.

Pie crusts were even called "coffins" (which mostly meant "box" at the time).
In 1800's New England, Thanksgiving was a popular time for rural weddings: families gathered, food was prepared, and harvest tasks were already completed; ideal for celebrating new marriages.

Pies would be prepared weeks ahead, then left in unheated attics or cellars to freeze/chill.

Here's a sad statistic: Stevie Ray Vaughan was on the planet for 13,092 days. As of today, it's been exactly 13,092 days since he died. Tomorrow, he will have been gone longer than he was here. Today would have been his 71st birthday. Did you ever see him live?

RIP Stevie Ray!

Pennie Smith photographed Paul Simonon of The Clash at the New York Palladium, September 20, 1979.

She made one of the most famous images in (punk) rock history.

I remember seeing this trailer with one of my buddies in a rather empty theater. Totally blew us away and set some pretty high expectations. I can't even remember what movie we did see that afternoon, but this I still do.
Star Wars opened today in 1977, I'm enormously fond of the first, terrible, trailer 20th Century Fox cut for it. They had no idea how to sell it, or faith in the project, and it it shows. www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHk5...

Great song, though very sad. My favorite track on what might be the first Alligator Records album I ever bought, oh so long ago.

This is terribly sad news. Clem Burke was an incredible drummer.
It is with profound sadness that we relay news of the passing of our beloved friend and bandmate Clem Burke following a private battle with cancer. (1/7)

The Pan-American Highway is the longest continuous road in the world. It starts in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, and runs to Ushuaia at the southern tip of Argentina.

From polar bears to penguins.

Except NONE OF THAT IS TRUE. There is NO Pan-American Highway, just the DREAM of one.

A letter from the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas.

“I never thought I would live in a time when the United States government would censure a bishop, jeopardize religious free speech, or threaten to take people while they attend worship.” ⚓️

50 years ago tonight, my buddies and I went to see Led Zeppelin. What little I can remember I'll never forget. I still remember being blown away hearing Kashmir for the first time, live, a few weeks before Physical Graffiti came out.

Why don't Texans put beans in chili?

To answer that, I have to tell you some of the *clear history* & *hazy legends* of chili con carne, the 'Chili Queens' & San Antonio.

The story (might) start on the Canary Islands 1731, claimed by Spain, but off the coast of Africa. A group of 16 families...

I’ve been on and off the radar for the past year working on project that’s taken me to more than 400 taquerias, where I consumed more than 1200 tacos across more than 14,000 miles. The result is this banger: The 50 Best Taco in Texas.
