I was there just a couple of weeks ago. Walked around the downtown area and didn't see any plywood. Seemed very normal and everyone I interacted with was very welcoming to this foreign visitor.
The thing that most surprised me was the green bike lanes - not something I expected to see in a US city.

We all need to be prepared this week for when on Friday Donald Trump — much to his complete and total surprise — doesn’t actually get the Nobel Peace Prize and he loses his mind.

“You described Reform and other parties across Europe today as among the 'right wing equivalents of the fascists in the 1930s'. Why?”

“Because that’s what they are”

@vicderbyshire.bsky.social asks Lord Heseltine about remarks he made at Conservative Party Conference.

Last month was the 3rd lowest #Antarctic sea ice extent on record for the month of September.

This was 850,000 km² below the 1981-2010 September average. Data from the @nsidc.bsky.social: nsidc.org/data/seaice_...

Personally my concern about research in this area is that it has the potential to make geoengineering concepts look more credible to the media, general public, and eventually to some politicians who are desperate to seize on any excuse to slow/stop progress towards decarbonisation.

As far as I can make out they are in favour of avoiding any barriers to research on SRM being put in place but not saying research will/should eventually lead to large-scale deployment. SRM is just one of the five geoengineering concepts we reviewed. The paper does not call for a ban on research.

Some of them undoubtedly are. The even bigger question is why do ordinary people vote for sociopaths?

Fortunately, she's not in government and probably never will be. Considering the way her party are tanking in the polls she probably won't even survive as party leader to the end of next year.

Storm #Amy is expected to bring storm surges to the south east on the night of Oct 4th-5th, raising the high tide by around 1 metre. Fortunately it is not spring tides yet, but in areas with a smaller tidal range we can expect high total levels.
ntslf.org/files/ntslf_...
Ensemble of surge forecasts for Oct 2nd - 8th 2025. Storm surge starting north west England and Scotland on the 4th, then going down the east coast. This is surge residual so the peak (nearly 2m) will not coincide with the highest tide. Small triangles indicate the time of high tide at each site. Spring tides are a couple of days after full moon, which is not till the 7th.

A question for Times columnist Sebastian Payne:

What is this cheaper source of "energy" that you speak of?

The world's energy experts would like to know…
polarrobs.bsky.social
I dispute that. This is a large team of leading scientists who have spent most of the past two years looking at these geoengineering concepts in order to produce this review.

What kind of person would choose to adopt a policy that would put the future wellbeing of their children and grandchildren at risk for short-term financial gain?

We must continue Dr. Jane Goodall's mission and all fight for the future of the planet.

This is madness. We are on course to exceed the Paris 1.5°C threshold before the end of the decade, beyond which the risk of triggering several tipping points increases rapidly. What part of this does Badenoch not understand?

That means more majors. An Atlantic hurricane today is 2X more likely to become a major hurricane than just a few decades ago. It’s not coincidence, it’s #climatechange

Changes are already taking place, and accelerating, although as yet still not quickly enough. The energy transition is being driven increasingly by economics.
polarrobs.bsky.social
Current global policies have to change, and I'm sure they will, but the magnitude of impacts will depend on how quickly that happens.

Accurate, but I don't think it's fair to stoke individual guilt when governments and multinational companies are lagging in doing their part.
