I think I'm going to end up talking about AI and LLM technology much more often. I think it's a good idea to pin this thread that outlines my more nuanced stance on things.
polotek.bsky.social
I appreciate this discussion about the ethics of LLM technology. These are people I know to be smart and experienced in software development, as well as progressive and empathetic humans. And we still are going to land in different places when coming to terms with the impact of this AI tech.

So yeah anyway, I don’t really know. Which is why I’m trying to talk about it. There’s a lot of upside but also very intense downsides. The uncertainty is really bothering me.

I'm not worried about you. But someone who is less skilled, less experienced, less disciplined. It's gonna be a problem.
polotek.bsky.social
That's definitely part of what I'm worried about. I'm not judging the tinkering. Exploring these things is actually fun. But I don't think that should be mixed with using them for serious work. And I think that's what we see happening a lot.

To me, the prompt in the screenshot feels imprecise in a way that increases the probability that it will misunderstand your intent. Obviously these things are relatively non-deterministic, so there's no perfect prompt. But I do think there's more likely and less likely.
polotek.bsky.social
Almost right but the part that is wrong is catastrophic. I think that's right in line with what we see from LLMs.

FWIW, I'm not giving you a hard time about security or anything like that. I'm thinking more about whether the prompts make mistakes more likely.
polotek.bsky.social
That's true. I'm not talking about confusion though. More like people have no idea what you're talking about and decide to completely ignore what you're saying.
polotek.bsky.social
That's certainly true in this case.

I don't think I've shared this core truth with bluesky yet. The police are a gang.

A Mississippi mother who spent 7 months searching for her son discovered that an off-duty officer ran him over less than an hour after he left the house.

Authorities then buried him without notifying his family

TL; DR
In the next 5 business days you should be able to go to Link's page on blacksky.community and see his posts and he'll be able to post but people using the bsky mobile apps won't see it.
After that we'll get Blacksky-only posts up.
After that we can talk about purging bsky mod tools

I mean I agree with all of this for sure. But I do think it becomes increasingly difficult to communicate if you don't use the words people recognize. You end up constantly explaining yourself, and there's still lots of room for miscommunication.
polotek.bsky.social
Is this you or from someone else? I hope people aren't talking to these things like this.

I hear and see your concerns. Over the weekend, a couple users hosted on Blacksky's PDS were banned from the Bluesky app and thus the Bluesky API servers. This was a weakness of our system I've been aware of and hoped we had more time to address before any kind of public incident. 1/11

I'm sorry people liked this because it's a mistake. It's supposed to say I *don't* think that's why people aren't reacting.

Miller’s attempt to deem The Left terrorism was obviously where this was going and why, in addition to it being intellectually and morally correct, it was important to resist efforts to classify pro-Palestinian groups as such. You reject the politicization of “terrorism” or you accept it for all.
polotek.bsky.social
I do think that's the reason people aren't reacting.

I feel like I'm not being heard. It has been 10 months since he took office. What is not accelerated to you right now?
polotek.bsky.social
I challenge the notion that any successful movement has ever been entirely non-violent. It's just that people wanna forget about the other parts and claim they had no impact. Because that feels better.
polotek.bsky.social
I'm not sure that kind of historical comparison is likely to be accurate. The civil rights movement didn't happen everywhere at once either. Your parents remember the end. And maybe we're not there yet. But the idea is not to get there at all.

Two years ago I sounded like a conspiracy theorist. A year ago I sounded like I was overreacting. Today, most left-leaning people understand what's happening. But we're still firmly entrenched in the "maybe it'll all blow over" phase.
polotek.bsky.social
We can't keep living that fairy tale. Especially not when mourning Assata Shakur is reminding us of the stakes.
polotek.bsky.social
I'm not advocating for violent protests. But I am challenging the naive notion that non-violent resistance can singlehandedly stop what's happening. I know everybody wants to hang on to the notion that it was MLK's tactics alone that people responded to in the 60s. It's just not true.
polotek.bsky.social
I'm not here to call anybody out. But this came up in a conversation about protests and someone said the protests must remain non-violent. Because the regime is "waiting on an excuse". They're not. They're really not. Everything short of tanks rolling down Main St is happening right now.

I guess I stopped repeating this often enough. The fascist authoritarian coup continues apace.

Once again. Say it with me.

Fascist Authoritarian Coup.

This is not a drill.
polotek.bsky.social
I probably didn't explain myself well. It's not about being hopeful. What I see is people thinking that we are putting up a resistance, and that resistance is effective. Like it's stopping them or slowing them down. It's not.

I must be following different people. I don't see many hopeful, much less "winning", posts.

It may be true that sentiment is shifted against the Trump administration. If we had a vote tomorrow, I'm pretty certain they would lose. But I'm not sure we'll make it to a vote. And if we do, they may have already compromised the election process.
