I was thinking a little today about how my parent's generation really seemed not just disinterested in their kids' survival but sort of hostile to it. Like I had been told that parents want their kids to thrive but in the older generation I largely found them fuming that we were even here at all.

Oracle has had to take on $56 billion in debt to build data centers for OpenAI's $300 billion, 5-year-long compute deal. OpenAI doesn't have the money, Oracle doesn't have the compute, but the debt is very real, and can hurt them. This could be existential!

OpenAI Will Cause Material Harm To Oracle, Which Is Taking On At Least $56 Billion Of Debt To Build Data Centers For A Company That May Be Dead Before They Are Built Oracle is, according to Bloomberg, taking on $38 billion of debt to build out the data centers in Texas and Wisconsin for OpenAI, and has raised $18 billion in bonds too, all to build data centers for OpenAI, a company that burns billions of dollars a year. Oracle is also not really capitalized to build massive amounts of data centers, with only around $11 billion of cash in hand as of the last quarter, and free cash flow at an astonishingly bad negative $5.88 billion. The Information also reports that Oracle’s GPU gross margins are hot dogshit, with an aggregate gross margin of 14.2% in August 2025. Oracle’s overall gross margins were a near-healthy 67.3% in the same period, but per The Information, “Oracle’s public disclosures imply its GPU cloud business could equal the company’s noncloud revenue as soon as 2028,” meaning that selling AI compute is turning Oracle from a good business into a bad business. And one of its biggest customers is OpenAI, who cannot afford to pay for its services. In other good news, CEO Safra Catz stepped down weeks after the OpenAI deal was signed, I assume because the future looked so bright and she wanted to be less involved in it for some reason.
