Can confidently say that no one has a sense of what it will look like to pause possibly trillions in federal grant obligations and disbursements even for a few weeks, possibly far longer given review time required. But we’re about to get a lesson in what the taken-for-granted state really does.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.
