That is, so far as I know, what Section 230 of the Communications Act exists for.

100% inspection is generally speaking, statistically unnecessary. That's what my original question/point is about. How necessary is it, really, to scan literally every single file that gets uploaded? That's kind of brute-forcing review.

I'm not a lawyer, so I'm not going to profess any particular knowledge on the matter of liability. But it's like, at the ice cream factory, you don't have taste testers taking a bite out of every single package that leaves the factory, to make sure every single package is perfect.

Actually, my point is EXACTLY the opposite.

What even is the point of decentralization if everybody still has to bend over backwards to please giant corporations?

I do gotta say I appreciate Fedi's content labeling system where instead of choosing from a list, you create the warning label yourself because you're an adult and can handle things like that.
& If you forget to label you can edit your post because you're an adult & can...

Numbers would be a little more helpful.
Does anybody know how many illegal images get uploaded per 1,000? Presumably somebody does, otherwise you'd have no idea if inspection is effective at all in the first place.

If you look at the bottom right corner of your post, you'll see three dots. Click on that to bring up a menu. One of the options is for reporting.

But seriously, statistically, what would get through? Feels like something statistical process control could efficiently be applied to.

Anime styled graffiti art on a train car depicting a male demon looking seductively at another man while saying "That's a good boy", with the phrase "kiss yr homies goodnight" in the bottom left corner.
Artist seems to be "Akira BPD"

I feel like statistical analysis of uploads would reveal that inspecting 100% of uploads is unnecessary. Sampling every 1 in 10, would probably be overkill even. But yeah, seeing the numbers, re. problem content in proportion to benign content would be interesting.
powflip.bsky.social
Just throwing this out for example, would it really make a difference in how much problem content gets through if only 1 out of 10 uploads is inspected? It seems bizarrely wasteful to dedicate resources to inspection of 100% of uploads. It would be interesting to see statistics.
powflip.bsky.social
What I don't understand is, given only a small proportion of content uploaded is problematic, why is there a presumption that inspection of 100% of uploads is necessary? Why wouldn't sampling be sufficient? And if sampling returns problem content, mod attention is directed to the source.

an interesting note re: scaling image moderation. in the past 24 hours:

at least 500 thousand images in posts (not considering # of images, just if an image was in the post)
86 thousand avatars
500 thousand url thumbnails
58 thousand videos.

that's a lot to moderate!

More and more I feel like there genuinely is no future for microblogging social sites.

And probably that's a good thing for society as a whole.

From what has been posted by the team on this site, it seems the majority of the effort expended by the people on the team is just reviewing what was flagged automatically... which makes me wonder how much work actually has been reduced.

Explain the ethics part of this. I don't understand how ethics enters into it. I get practical considerations, but not the moral implications.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.
