Mel Gibson's house in LA has burned down while Gibson was being interviewed by Joe Rogan. During this interview, Gibson nodded along in agreement while Rogan accused climate scientists of fearmongering.

It's also a place that people all around the world have heard about, so international media further boosts the coverage.
Plus, it's relevant to EVERYONE because wildfires in winter is exactly the kind of climate crisis stuff scientists have been predicting. We all SHOULD care!

German colleague asked why so many people live in California with disasters like fire, mudslides, earthquakes. I used to live in Los Angeles. The disasters are evidence *for* how nice a place it is to live. If everyone lines up at a kebab stand in a war zone, you should believe it is damn good kebab
I know we all have disaster fatigue, but the reason why historic LA fires get so much coverage is because there are more people in greater LA county than in *most US states*

Nearly 400 incarcerated firefighters deployed to fight the LA fires.

Here's a reminder that slavery is legal under the US 13th amendment for convicted felons and America has the highest incarceration rate on the planet. They could hire actual fire fighters, but they said, slaves will do.

We are heading towards an uninsurable future.

The est. cost of the LA wildfires is ~$150bn (insured costs of $8bn).

Many in these catastrophe-prone areas will struggle to insure homes.

This is what happens when politicians don’t heed the warnings of scientists.
