have just received word that the faber & faber christmas crackers this year contain this as a 'fun fact': "DID YOU KNOW - in 2024, an ocelot was trained to be a Bookseller". this is just not the case. they did indeed let it loose in the shop, but it very rapidly had to be gathered up again

Damn. My teen reading wouldn't have been as head-melting without John Varley - this book in particular. I mean, yes, it's Heinlein with the serial numbers wonkily covered with gaffer tape, but it's also subversive and kind of punk - a bit ramshackle and outré. Blessed be.
News is coming to me via friends on Facebook, and via Fancyclopedia, that John Varley, who wrote Millennium, Steel Beach, and the Gaea trilogy (Titan, Wizard, Demon) has died. He was an excellent writer in the Campbell/Heinlein tradition, and I dug him a lot in my teens and early 20s. RIP.

I thought of something today that hasn't crossed my mind in years: writing a good copy. I'm not sure I ever did it beyond Year 7 - by that time my handwriting was truly appalling anyway, so the difference between 'rough' and 'good' was generally negligible.
