Last but not least, the final step in my Imperial Radch binge earlier this year. This was my favorite of the lot, though I loved them all. The characters, the world, the struggle. So much discovery, self and other. Typing this is making me want to read it again but my copy is in NJ aaaaah.

This book peeled my brain like an onion and I cried through like a third of it. If you love stories about memory, you'll love it. This was also my scariest audiobook experience to date, bar none. The audiobook is a work of art. It's going to hurt you cognitively and emotionally. Read it immediately.

I was feral for this book. The worldbuilding was rich and effortless. The characters were fascinating, and complemented each other in evolving ways no matter how they changed. Horrifying and hungry, desperate and divine. Such spectacular sensory detail that as I type this I taste honey on my tongue.

My first (absolutely not last) novel by Alix E. Harrow. The richness of the prose had my heart in its fist from the opening lines, and the characters swept me up seconds later. I was a blissful wreck reading this. If I close my eyes I can see Eden. If I listen close I can smell the smoke.

If you know me, you know I am a Rachel Harrison fanboy. But this book is something really special. Complexly told and SO scary, also carrying out the trend of all her books going right for my jugular in particular. Deep and untidy analysis of who gets to control the narrative when things go wrong.

I'm not sure there was anything that could have prepared me for this book. The writing was delicious, delirious, and every freak in its magnificent cast was linguistically adored. File under books I would chew on if I had a spare. File under books I would have a summer fling with if they'd have me.

I read this in one day and it hurt. It was so good. It hurt so bad. This is cosmic horror and sci fi and a love story and it has so much humanity and desperation and wonder and humor and love, and love, and love. I had to clutch it to my chest and pace the kitchen crying for a bit after I finished.

I had been anticipating this book for ages, and it did not disappoint. I have seldom been as stressed out by a book in my life. An absolute roller coaster of blood, sweat, gritted teeth, and knitting needles. A battle cry: love someone, make something, refuse to let the bastards get you down.

This book was horrifying, devastating, and necessary. It was a painful and riveting exploration of the surge of anti-Asian racism at the height of the COVID lockdown, as well as a stewpot of grief, personal and community wide. It also had the best on-page depiction of OCD I have ever seen.

This book is longer than I typically gravitate toward, but no words were wasted. The writing here is staggeringly gorgeous (I listened to it, and had to keep repeating lines back) and the story was one gut punch after another. This book feels important and I felt...well...basically everything.

Nonfiction first. I started reading this on a whim, briefly wondered if it was too intense for me to handle at this point in time, and then was so glad I stuck with it. A complex analysis of Predator (the film) as well as a poignant exploration of what it means to be a man, for better and worse.

"I'm returning two books to the library and really I just want one graphic novel so I can still leave with fewer books than I- oh goddamnit."

Everyone check out the sick ink I got at the natural history museum the other day.

"I'm bringing two books back to the library. If I come home with one or fewer, I'll still have reduced my total number of library books. It'll be fine!"

Is it an awards eligibility post? Is it a retrospective? I dunno, but here it is. I published some words this year. Check it out. (If there is anything you'd like to read and can't find, let me know and I'll get it to ya!) 🫀
