Texas AG Ken Paxton hired a former staffer to work on a recent case. As a state employee, her labor would have cost taxpayers $641.

As a private attorney, Paxton allowed her to bill $3,780 an hour, so that day of work cost taxpayers $24,570.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton Is Outsourcing More of His Office’s Work to Costly Private Lawyers
Despite having an office of hundreds of attorneys, Ken Paxton is frequently opting for private lawyers — many to whom he has personal or political ties — to argue on behalf of Texas. One attorney cost...

Everyone can set aside partisanship, psychologizing, pathologizing, whatever, and—I would hope—still see that it’s incredibly dangerous for a political leader to be this disconnected from the real conditions in the country.

Trump: "I don't know what could be worse than Portland. You don't even have stores anymore. They don't even put glass up. They put plywood on their windows."

Worth watching--this should be a no-brainer for any provost who values academic freedom and autonomy, as @mbkplus.bsky.social and I discussed.

This is a remarkable statistic in light of the media's efforts to link military activity and crime prevention.

58% of Americans - including half of Republicans - think the president should send armed troops only to face external threats, a sign of unease as President Donald Trump increasingly deploys National Guard troops to police American cities, a @reuters.com poll found.

As someone who closely followed the debates over executive power during the Bush administration, it's demoralizing that we seemingly learned nothing, with some of the same characters trotting out expansive views of Art. II with little regard for statutes. We need generational change in the academy.

In which we discuss the Trump administration's higher ed compact as an extension of its use of patronage (which is, in many ways, the opposite of its stated goal of meritocracy). And @profmarkovic.bsky.social plays it coy re his feelings about private equity; see if you can read between the lines!

Good reporting on the South Shore raid from South Side weekly here.

Confirms one thing I was told but didn't put in my own piece because I didn't have a second source and it seemed too insane: border agents segregated arrested residents by race

Federal Agents Storm South Shore Building, Detaining Families and Children
Families were woken by flashbangs and helicopters as hundreds of federal agents raided their homes. Days later, neighbors are still searching for the missing.

No lawyer closely associated with the administration will have much of a post-Trump career. It's why they are willing to flout any and all professional norms.

You can joke about Pam Bondi’s ridiculous unprofessionalism all you want, but I’m deeply shocked by it: She acts as if she fears absolutely no consequences, convinced that there will be no more political power transfers. — This should shake everyone to their core.

It's not just that they're going to strike down a law against conversion therapy, it's that they're going to do it on behalf of made-up claims from a straw plaintiff who can't honestly show the law affected her at all

One thing about American's widespread distrust and disapproval of the Supreme Court is that mainstream news coverage mostly doesn't dwell on stuff like standing, so people don't even begin to grasp how rigged the Court truly is www.nytimes.com/live/2025/10...

I think that's right, but doesn't reliance have to be reasonable? The inapplicability of LOAC to suspected drug traffickers isn't a close call.

This really makes it sound like a Border Patrol agent tried to kill an anti-ICE activist in Chicago and DHS lied to cover for him
profmarkovic.bsky.social
This seems pretty egregious even by Trump administration standards. If the lawyer is correct, the agent fired seven shots at the defendant because she was annoying him.
