I think it's problematic to view the AI research community as having a single agenda. It's diverse, and there are many views.

Also worth reminding those who may not be aware that LLMs are a sub-field of Deep Learning, which is a sub-field of Neural networks, which is a sub-sub-field of AI.

The thing that gets me is that of all communities, I’d certainly expect the AI research community to be very aware of the limitations of LLMs!

A reminder that the 70+ year-old research discipline of AI is much bigger than genAI, much bigger than just deep learning, much bigger than Big Tech. AI includes symbolic reasoning, multi-agent systems and statistical machine learning and is used for astrophysics, renewable energy and climate models

Framing of AI safety as primarily about x-risk has 3 drawbacks:
1.Excludes researchers with different perspectives about what AI safety is and why we should care about
2.Misleads public about the field's scope and necessity
3.Creates resistance to build safe AI systems from those skeptical of x-risk

Ooh, the controversy! I pronounce it "Ay-MAS". We'll see what AAMAS attendees think on Friday. Am also curious as to whether the pronunciation aligns with geography ...

Here is how I have been comparing the two big hype phenomena in AI and robotics, in my recent talks. Spoiler alert: the hype is unfounded.
