New preprint out! I did a literature review to check whether the use of distinct types of spatial networks in ecology has led to research silos or, instead, generated bridges among theoretical frameworks due to their methodological similarities. Find out here 👉 ecoevorxiv.org/repository/v...

It was a pleasure to attend the @csee-sceemtgs.bsky.social in Sherbrooke. The quality of presentations was impressive, the feedback very relevant and kind. I learned so much. Congrats to the organisation committee. I'll definitely recommend the next editions!

Canadian natural science graduate stipends lie below the poverty line, by Fraass et al. 2025

🚨 New Paper 🚨
Coauthors and I just published our work in PLOS One on Canadian graduate funding. We found that Canadian graduate funding falls _well_ below cost of living.
On average, $10kCAD below cost of living.

This is the best, more elegant, description of what LLMs do.

I wish more people understood that.

Plus: there are many different tools under the umbrella of “AI” that work differently, but a common thread is they main work through giant regression models.
astrokatie.com
Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

I did 5 independent replications of each condition. So I got 30 names (some repeated) for each condition

Results:

"tough-minded and rigorous": 22/30 males, 8/30 females

"friendly and kind": 8/30 males, 22/30 females

Not really surprising, I guess....

Examples below.
