I can’t do ultra-high-res sky imaging with my own setup, but should I?

DSS2 already did the hard part and put the data out there. So I grabbed a chunk of Orion and reprocessed signals: stretching, color remapping, and teasing out faint structure from those digitized plates.

NGC 2264 is a cluster of young stars between one and five million years old. The stars are seen here as blue and white lights surrounded by swirls of gas—the “pine needles” of the tree—with green representing light in the visible spectrum.

HiPOD: Faint Traces of Dark Flows

This image shows some faint traces of dark flows along the headwall of an impact crater. These are relics of seasonal recurring slope lineae that formed on an equator-facing slope.

the helix nebula has always been one of my favorites cause it looks like a giant space eyeball
In this composite image, a cloud of gas strongly resembles a large eye. Here, a hazy blue cloud is surrounded by misty, concentric rings of pale yellow, rose pink, and blood orange. Each ring appears dusted with flecks of gold, particularly the outer edges of the eye shape. The entire image is speckled with glowing dots in blues, whites, yellows, and purples.

NASA's Pioneer 10 took the first image of Europa from a spacecraft during a flyby in December 1973. This image is from a distance, although bright and dark regions on Europa are clearly present. Jupiter's moon Europa as captured by NASA's Juno spacecraft. The brownish-gray surface of Europa takes center stage. Its surface is revealed to be rugged, with pits and troughs near the day-night boundary. The leftmost third of the moon is shrouded in the black of night. Spread across the moon, numerous bright and dark ridges and bands stretch across a fractured exterior like the webbing on a cantaloupe's skin, revealing the tectonic stresses Europa endured over millennia. Bright green clouds and dust with blue stars visible The green aurora can be seen above the Earth at night from the ISS. Many stars are visible in the background against the blackness of space. Spitzer Telescope image of the Horsehead Nebula. In visible-light images, the nebula has a distinctively dark and dusty horse-shaped silhouette, but when viewed in infrared light, dust becomes transparent and the nebula appears as a wispy arc. Here, blue represents light emitted at a wavelength of 3.6-microns, and cyan (blue-green) represents 4.5-microns, both of which come mainly from hot stars. Green represents 8-micron light and red represents 24-micron light. Relatively cooler objects, such as the dust of the nebulae, appear green and red. The Crab Nebula's complex oval structure lies against a black background. On the nebula’s exterior, particularly at the top left and bottom left, lie curtains of glowing red and orange fluffy material. Interior to this outer shell lie large-scale loops of mottled filaments of yellow-white and green, studded with clumps and knots. The central interior of the nebula glows brightly. Around and within the supernova remnant are many points of blue-white light in the Hubble image.

The Milky Way above the Ring of Brodgar, on Orkney.

In an otherwise clear sky, it was "disappointing" to have that band of cloud that just didn't want to disperse.

The bright light on the clouds is from the town of Stromness, where we had docked a few hours earlier.
