I have been trying to get this published as an op-ed, but I am going to post it here since I think it is timely in light of the "consent" extortion events.

I wrote this piece about 7th anniversary of Jamal Khashoggi's murder.

On the costs of speaking the truth in today's world.

And how Jamal's memory still stalks Saudi Arabia--- and the Washington Post.

Jamal Khashoggi, the Washington Post, and the Cost of Speaking Out
As Saudi Arabia hosts comedians and courts gamers, the silenced voice of Jamal Khashoggi still echoes.

Ever wondered how to incorporate fossils as tips in a phylogenetic tree?
Our new paper provides a comprehensive guide!

I am extremely happy to see that our review on fossil tip-dating is out in early view in Systematic Biology! A huge thanks to all the authors of this massive project (@heckeberg.bsky.social, @basantakhakurel.bsky.social, Gustavo Darlim, and @hoehna.bsky.social)! academic.oup.com/sysbio/advan...

Mitch Hedberg:

"An escalator can never break: it can only become stairs. You should never see an 'Escalator Temporarily Out Of Order' sign, just 'Escalator Temporarily Stairs. Sorry for the convenience.'"

Turns out, you can walk on the escalator. Who knew.

The success of a social media platform allowing such communities is whether I can see and interact with posts that hit the 5 people who care about my hyperspecific nerddom or ask a weird niche questions in peace without spam, trolls, and pr0n flooding my feed--not that anything I do goes viral.
pseudacris.bsky.social
This thread says scientists on blue sky stoke political flames, rather than build science communities, as evidenced by viral posts being political. The problem w/social media is the optimization target--but we evaluate the success of domain-specific science discourse by virality metrics? Huh?!?

💡2/ I was inspired to write this by an analysis by my colleague @lassehjorthmadsen.bsky.social . It shows that among 200 highly influential scientists on Bluesky worldwide, the posts with the most reposts and likes are overwhelmingly about US politics:

The rampant violations of academic freedom and intrusions on extramural speech are escalating rapidly. Faculty members have the right to speak or write as citizens, free from institutional censorship or discipline. Expression of opinion as a citizen does not constitute grounds for dismissal.
Clemson fires two more faculty members over Charlie Kirk comments
Clemson leaders had come under increased pressure from people online as well as South Carolina Republican politicians to take action.

We write to remind leaders of colleges & universities of their fundamental duty to protect academic freedom & the absolute necessity to ensure that the freedom to discuss topics of public import without constraint is not curtailed under political pressure.

“There’s a hyperparasitoid (Hypopteromalus tabacum) on a parasitoid (Cotesia congregata) on a Sphinx (Ceratomi catalpae) on a tree (Catalpa sp.) by the pond in the middle of VT.” Fun find this week. My mind is all children’s songs these days but the lyrics might need some work….

Registration is now open for #SSB2026!

I'm so excited to see many of you here in Baton Rouge in January! We're going to hear great talks, discuss the immeasurable value of natural history collections, and continue to strengthen our scientific community.

If you corrected by minutes played, or defensive possessions, the gap between Tisse and everyone else would be absurd. He missed most of last season and played less than half the minutes of most of these guys.

Plot of global benthic δ18O data for 0 – 5.3 Ma (Lisiecki & Raymo, 2005) with geomagnetic polarity subchrons displayed on the top x-axis and planktic foraminiferal primary biozones plotted on the bottom x-axis using the deeptime package. A mammal phylogeny (Garland et al., 1992) plotted in the fan layout using the ggtree and deeptime packages. The greyscale concentric circles in the background indicate geological stages, whereas the linear colored timescale indicates geological epochs. Early tetrapod occurrence data (Jones et al., 2023) plotted as a taxonomic/biostratigraphic range plot using the geom_points_range() function from the deeptime package. A stratigraphic column of Cretaceous lithostratigraphic units from the San Juan Basin, USA. The deeptime package has been used to add pattern fill which indicate the primary lithologies of the units as reported by the Macrostrat API (Peters et al., 2018) via the rmacrostrat R package (Jones et al., 2024).
