I don’t know if this qualifies as “great”, but Covid restrictions went into place a few months after I opened my lab. Twitter was THE place to network, complain, make jokes, share papers. I honestly think being active there was a huge help to recruit and gain visibility during a tough period

Has anything great happened in your life because of social media?

I'm glad that most academic institutions are on Bluesky now, so we can get the press releases I used to love on Twitter that are like "Congratulations to this year's Nobel Prize winner _______, who once used our third-floor bathroom."

Very sad news, John Gurdon has died.

A developmental biologist's developmental biologist, Nobel prize winner

His work is the foundation of much of today's dev & stem cell bio.

An inspiration to many, including me. Always asking questions & wanting the answers

A strong quality for a good researcher is the ability to sometimes ignore small details, and sometimes delves into them with the greatest care, and more importantly to being able to switch wisely between the two modes.

Today in @nature.com, we present our work leveraging functional genomics and human blastoids to uncover a human-specific mechanism in preimplantation development driven by the endogenous retrovirus HERVK.
Special thanks to the reviewers whose comments improved our manuscript a lot! rdcu.be/eI3tD

Oh yeah, very technically challenging. But Saitou has already done mind blowing work making mature gametes from ESCs. Plus, in principle, here you would have proper epigenetic reprogramming and meiosis, mitigating your concerns and those of @greally.bsky.social

Jane Goodall, ethologist and conservationist, has died. She was 91

Wouldn’t the better technique be to make iPSCs that then differentiate to sperm and/or egg? That seems to be where the research is heading in Mitinori Saitou’s lab, at least.
