This is terrible news.
Clearly, a solution MUST be found!
Flybase is ESSENTIAL!!

An absolutely awful turn of events. I am heartbroken over the firing of the Flybase staff. Thanks to @claudia-lopez.bsky.social for covering this important story.

FlyBase, a Drosophila database, will lose a third of its team in early October because the Harvard grant that covered the employees’ salaries was canceled. Scientists warn that losing FlyBase could devastate fly research.

My PhD work from @hariharanlab.bsky.social is finally out in @dev-journal.bsky.social! We investigated an interesting paradox: how can reduced function of the adhesion molecule Echinoid (Ed) cause seemingly opposite phenotypes—overgrowth and elimination—in different contexts? (1/8)
dev-journal.bsky.social
The cell-adhesion molecule Echinoid promotes tissue survival and separately restricts tissue overgrowth.

Fig.3. echinoid clones are generated and then die, especially when more wild-type tissue is present. (A-F) Wing discs containing GFP-marked clones expressing either UAS-w-RNAi (A,C,E) or UAS-ed-RNAi (B,D,F). Heat shocks of 12 min (A,B), 15 min (C,D) and 30 min (E,F) generate clones at progressively higher density. Scale bar in H applies to H-K. Scale bar in A applies to A-F.

attention 🪰folks. many of you received a survey from @genetics-gsa.bsky.social about potential future sites of the US Fly meeting. We are excited for #Dros26 Chicago, but future sites are in question, for many logistical reasons. GSA is hard at work planning, but we need to hear from you. please RT!

"Yes" for knowledge in experimental stem cell biology, but "no" for mouse expertise... though I might still be able to dissect tetrads and I can definitely do fly crosses...
