I was explaining to my Ukrainian colleague the phrase ‘There’s no such thing as a free lunch’. She told me the equivalent in Ukrainian is ‘The only free cheese is in the mousetrap’ - which is so much better

Did you know I publish a #Substack that has a large, free-to-read archive of articles based on my own research? It's called
#Caravanserai: "An artist lighting her way through dark times by relearning forgotten art practices and natural ways."

Went back and re-listened to parts of my pod for @terodotus.bsky.social and Sképsislamica to organize some notes for an upcoming set of talks, and I had a few real moments in here if I do say so myself! Probably explained things better than in the actual book tbh 😅

Really, DRIVE is fantastic!
Bluesky pals! I have a sci-fi graphic novel called DRIVE, and it's my favorite thing I've ever done!

If you need a long, escapist read at the moment, I highly, highly recommend a deep-dive! The entire thing is free to read, here: drivecomic.com

Today is the feast of Wiborada, d. 926. She became a nun and later anchoress at St. Gall. She bound many books in the abbey library! She predicted the Magyar sack of St. Gall and thus allowed the monks to send the library for safekeeping and save themselves but she refused to flee and was martyred.

“An estimated 350,000 manuscripts have been inventoried from the dozens of old libraries of the city of Timbuktu, whose reputation for education and its medieval monuments have been favourably compared to universities.”

What did they write about? : An intellectual history of Timbuktu ca. 1450-1900.
No single body of primary sources in the literary heritage of West Africa has attracted as much attention and attained as much celebrity as the fabled manuscripts of Timbuktu.
