I went to Minneapolis last week. What I saw was horrifying and inspiring in equal measure. Gift link to my latest column: www.nytimes.com/2026/01/19/o...

I think it’s extremely cruel to do this for deportations/Gaza because those are human rights catastrophes, but totally fair game with tariffs

It’s the guy’s signature economic policy! If you’re a business owner who voted for him and then do shocked pikachu face at the tariffs you kinda deserve it!
Posted about this elsewhere — but I think it is a bad strategy politically, and very bad analysis of voter psychology (it really is!), to tweet about Trump’s tariffs and deportations etc and say “well, sucks for y’all who voted for it, you get what you vote for/reap what you sow” etc. Thoughts: 1/4

Reminder: the term "echo chamber" was popularised by leaked 2003 memos on how PhRMA spent $1 million to create an "intellectual echo chamber of economists -- a standing network of economists and thought leaders to speak against federal price control regulations through articles and testimony.''
One thing I find interesting about the echo chamber complaint is that an echo chamber just won a presidential election.

Put aside the convo of whether it’s “good” or “bad” for a moment. The far right has devoted enormous resources + time to building echo chambers & loathes spaces they don’t control
The "bluesky is an echo chamber" think pieces that keep popping up really tickle me because they show how certain people genuinely believe social media should be for debating and arguing and not talking about the things that make you happy and sharing art with the world.
