one evening we were walking back to our hotel room in Alaska and saw this beauty on the edge of the woods - light was fading and the trees were so busy around the owl - but i took a couple of pics anyway. Turned out beautiful - gold eyes in round striped face, and tiny pink beak on a powerful bird

this morning was foggy - though most of it was a bit higher up the hill - but ended up with cleaner background for the trees. Black and White edit to give a slightly ghostly effect. There can be a strength in trees - but an otherworldly-ness in the fog

i live on St. Joseph's Hill which has some wonderful madrona trees - last few days have been really foggy which inspired this edit. This is sort of #ClassicMono - I left the parts of the tree that are really red alone - the rest of the tree is really grey #trees #Scape #Forest #EastCoastKin
this is a madrona tree along a trail up St. Joseph's Hill - the bark is split with part of the tree being pale grey and the rest a deep mahogany red. heavy fog paled the greenery down the hill and the grasses are dead and pale yellow. this inspired a mostly silver treatment.

2 small birds, 1 is definitely a sparrow, are sitting on a branch covered with green and orange lichens - they are arguing over having to share the branch (the branch was several feet long - they just happened to land close to each other)

this Great Horned Owl checked us out from the depth of a distant dark group of trees very early one morning - it was too dark for my camera to be able to autofocus on it, so I manually focused on its bright white breast which was a dot in the distance. ISO 12800 before i was comfortable using such high iso, and a large crop because i was too excited to remember to extend my lens out to its longest distance - so its 891mm instead of 1000mm. My Olympus camera did so much better than the folks with me using much more expensive Canon gear! woot! (ok,, the Sony folk probably did better, but i'm still proud of my relatively tiny, much less expensive Olympus)

maple tree in my yard #YellowThu #ColorADay #garden #Nature #EastCoastKin this is with one of my favorite lenses - Helios-44m with both the front element reversed, and i think also the rear element reversed. I have one lens with only the front reversed - this one is more fun #abstract #photography
the Helios-44m lens is known for giving a swirly effect and wonderful bokeh - if you flip the front element (and possibly the rear one) it exaggerates the effect even more. it is a vintage manual focus lens, with the effect most extreme at 2.8 or 3.2- it also gives a blurry glow overall. really hard for me to focus - a very fun challenge. Here it is one of our maple trees against a sunlit green area of the garden that came out gold in the photo

the giant petrel is a large bird - with a 70-80 inch wingspread. This one's pink bill tip suggests it is a Northern Giant Petrel.

an indigo bunting is a smallish blue bird - this one stopped to sit on a branch as it was traveling through Galveston, Texas on migration(I think) - the blue is so intense - i tried decreasing saturation a bit, but this is how it came out of the camera. OM and Olympus cameras tend to overdo the blues though -

burrowing owls are small small mostly terrestrial owls found across a lot of southern united states. we have some in california - but building cities are killing them off. this one with its huge yellow eyes was in florida.

Falkland Islands Imperial or King Cormorants in breeding plumage with incredible blue eyes and the funny orange bobble on the top of their beaks. they would preen each other and tap the other's beak with their beaks. Their backs look black against their white chests but when you take a close up picture the feathers shine a deep irridescent blue
