As she opened it, the ambient light illuminated a small portrait of the goddess Lunaris. The painting, rendered with ethereal precision, was set in an intricate frame adorned with delicate golden gears. “It is well known that your brother holds these collectible pieces in high regard,” the man remarked with a measured bow, his voice smooth and serpentine. “We thought it might also be to your liking.” Selene’s brow furrowed for the briefest fraction of a second, a flicker so subtle it left her velvet composure unmarred. Of course, the gift wasn’t truly meant for her; it was an offering to curry favor with Verethis. What else could she have expected? “This is a most valuable gift, and I truly appreciate it,” she replied, her practiced smile gracing her lips with flawless precision. Not a hint of genuine gratitude threaded through the words, which flowed with the exact cadence of a finely tuned machine.

So different from Alexandria, who looked like tar on a worn and tattered cloth. “Is that bad?” Selene asked in a soft whisper, her voice contrasting with the heat blooming in her cheeks. “Very much so…” Alex laughed with a hint of bitterness, defeated by the irreverence of her own feelings. "You drive me fucking crazy, Moonbeam.” Crazy enough to want to have her, and Alex had never wanted anything in her entire life.
