Very much feeling like Seattle City Council would be better if they let people have speaking time like this because just as horrible things happen here as in Atlanta. www.youtube.com/watch?v=fScw...

The books I showed to my child were lies! Oh no!

Is this not literally at city hall too?! That looks like the coffee shop. Some great organizing from the Solidarity Budget folks and the puppet creators to have that out today!!

Wait, I thought he was saying she is a privileged elite for attending Oxford. I could see dropping out of Oxford since presumably it is not cheap or easy for a US person to attend Oxford, far from home!

Today over 100 students walked out of class to march though Seattle to end to the Palestinian Genocide

It was organized, peaceful, and had zero conflict with the police, so you probobly won’t see anything about it on the news

But remember that people are resisting, even if you don’t see it

I am reminded that under Mayor Durkan a project in NE Seattle was modified to remove the bike lane aspect (just paint and post aka vertical paint) after the project went out to bid. That too had years of outreach and very strong public support in SDOT surveys & outreach events.

What the records show:
-Major elements of the LWB redesign, like the changes at Orcas Street, nearly went out for construction before being killed by the Mayor's Office
-Parks staff were continuing to negotiate over individual elements of the project as late as early June.

Unfortunately most of his city council district didn't go to high school with him, so he doesn't recognize them as part of the community (*).

(* People who went to high school with him who show up to events protesting his policies also are invisible.)

The word "influencer" obviously can mean a lot of things, but what credible candidate for office hasn't been doing some kind of work to influence politics before they run? So what's the point of using that particular construction if not to evoke our current social media content system?

Oh I'm sure the article itself has many things I'd object to. But since many subscribers won't read beyond the email or the headline and first couple paragraphs, it kind of matters that the "hook" to get you to read is coded as if she's as serious as a tiktok beauty influencer.

The people you see in the streets are supported by people who do stuff like "just" washing dishes and making food. If you don't feel comfortable or can't be "in the streets", maybe you can find some work that is "just" helping in the background. People need that too.

It is small but I share to encourage you: I've been focusing on helping with kitchen volunteering at my church. Washing dishes, cleaning up, planning potlucks, bringing treats for coffee hour after service. It brings me great joy. Welcoming meals and social connection help people stay strong.

This video of Chicagoans intervening to save a man from being abducted off the streets by ICE is making the rounds on Instagram.

Community action works.

Imagine a mayor who has actually had to lead organizations with a genuinely tight budget instead of working at big (former monopoly) telecom and city government for a quite wealthy population. Maybe we might see some of that efficient and smart prioritization of funds we are constantly promised!

The email alert for this had this line as the main body: "Katie Wilson's run for Seattle mayor began as a political influencer"

Maybe I over-index on word choice but "influencer" in our current age feels like an intentional way to make her work seem unserious.

In addition to all the awesome events organized by our collaborators and community partners, for this year's #Weekwithoutdriving my Disability Rights WA colleague @ceceliablack.bsky.social organized two paratransit ride-alongs to bring together disabled riders and elected leaders...

See also many business tools having AI integrated. Video meeting bots: we can't get leadership to pay for or support good meeting & documentation social practices, but WILL pay for $$ for surveillance genAI integrations that produce mediocre notes that may be subtly (or obviously) incorrect.

And violate state open meetings law in the process, though I think only Durkan was ever "disciplined" for it.

Not really touched upon in this piece are the countless people – many unhoused themselves – helping their unhoused neighbors survive sweeps and sharing basic food, sanitary and other supplies. Only for the city to sweep and destroy over and over. Anti-homeless policy is degrading us all.

My member of congress (district next to Jayapal) put up a video about the budget amounting to the president is violating the law in not spending congressional appropriations in states/cities he doesn't like so we need to pass laws to stop that. I am like what. He's already violating the law so ...?
