It’s Pride weekend in SF Bay Area! 🌊 If you love the ocean but ignore attacks on LGBTQ+ people fighting for its future, you’re not walking your talk.
When intolerance is weaponized, allies must be the shield. Pride is protest. Show up. ✊🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

Had a wonderful time meeting ocean enthusiasts and optimists at the first Ocean Hoptimism gathering last night. Thanks for having me, @oceanhoptimism.bsky.social and Faction Brewing!

Dr. Rachel Carlson kicked off Ocean Hoptimism with Strength in Small Places: a hopeful, brainy, and deeply grounded talk about unexpected climate resilience. Here’s a thread of big takeaways from her standout talk. 🌊🧵

In 2019, we showed that tiny, bottom-dwelling fish can fuel coral reef energy fluxes. In our new paper, we reveal a dramatic dichotomy in their functional role across coral reef habitats separated by a few 100 meters.

Thanks for these! That Texas sign is excellent. Reminds me of the "Save the crabs - then eat them" messaging in the Chesapeake Bay.

During the last Trump administration at the EPA, we shifted from using the term ʻclimate changeʻ to talking about its effects - sea level rise, drought, atmospheric rivers, etc. I wonder how these results apply to politicized messaging?

What's better: climate "change” 🆚 “crisis” 🆚 “emergency”?

New work shows that subtle tweaks in language don't make a difference to green action ⬇️

To better understand how fishers and the seafood industry are responding to marine mammal interactions, there’s a voluntary, anonymous survey about use of and perceptions of deterrents. If you work in fishing communities in the US, please consider sharing! www.fisheries.noaa.gov/feature-stor...
NOAA Committee Conducting Survey on Methods to Deter Conflicts with Marine Mammals
Deadline for fishermen, dock and marina owners, and others to complete the survey extended to December 22.

Reporting from the Supreme Court on transgender rights in the Skrimetti case and I feel the weight of the moment.

I will report from the court throughout the day when I am allowed my phone.

Thank you all for putting me in a place where I can do this work for you.

"When you're 1% of the population, it's very hard to see how the democratic process will protect you" was quite a statement at the court after the TN attorney argued that the equal protection should be declined in favor of “the democratic process.”
