Mission accomplished! Our glider pilot Lydia recovers SG Goot from Lake Nipigon after a successful mission in collaboration with OMNR. Next stop: Lake Superior Shoals! @globservingsystem.bsky.social @gwfobservatories.bsky.social

Another first for Great Lakes science! In collaboration with OMNR, our glider, SG Goot, is now surveying Lake Nipigon. It’s equipped with a hydroacoustics bay to track fish movement and map bathymetry. Here’s to smooth sailing! @gwfobservatories.bsky.social @globservingsystem.bsky.social

Last week’s community science event was a great success! We saw some really cool aquatic plant & animal species & volunteers got hands-on experience collecting water quality data. We had lots of fun learning about our local water sheds & how to protect them!

Hope to see you at our next event!

I am calm for now. Won’t last. Cuts to @globservingsystem.bsky.social will not make humans safer on #GreatLakes. Will increase accidents & drownings. This applies to freighters, fishermen, car ferries, boaters, sailors &swimmers. And then there is all the climate data for my scientists to study

After a record 30-day mission, SG Goot is back on deck from Lake Ontario. This glider braved the shoulder season to capture important temperature data. Looking forward to working with our partners on the data analysis… stay tuned 👀 🌊 @efdtoronto.bsky.social

We had an amazing time on Sunday at Earth Day at Malden Park. Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth to chat and learn about water monitoring, and the work we are doing with RAEON. We are looking forward to seeing you again at our community science events starting this month! shorturl.at/FJN6L

RAEON has relied on @globservingsystem.bsky.social since day one. GLOS powers data that drives safety, science & the Great Lakes economy. Cutting funding risks it all.
globservingsystem.bsky.social
Information provided by GLOS supports the regional marine economy, improves forecasts, and supports decision-making and nearshore safety for countless stakeholders. Cutting or reducing funding would have wide-ranging impacts on Great Lakes communities’ economies and safety.

Winter in the Great Lakes is changing fast- and we need data to keep up. With support from @globservingsystem.bsky.social, CIGLR, and Orange Force Marine, RAEON recently deployed a glider in Lake Ontario to collect high-resolution temperature data to understand changing thermal dynamics.

"It’s the variability and the shifting timing of stream flows that will present the biggest challenges for southern Alberta farmers" John Pomeroy noted during his presentation at the Alberta Beef Conference 2025.

Being above average isn't always a good thing.

Check out the 2024 water temperature in Lakes Superior and Michigan. 23-24 winter was mild, so water was above average coming into the summer. It is still well above average.

#GreatLakes
2024 surface water temperature compared to 1995-2023 average for Lake Superior. Red 2024 is above the average line for the whole year. Typical lowest temperatures are early March and highest are in August. 2024 surface water temperature compared to 1995-2023 average for Lake Michigan.
