Yesterday I submitted the proofs for Claiming Land, Claiming Water: Borders and the People Who Crossed Them in the Early Modern Atlantic. This volume I’m editing with Jessica Roney is out next spring with @pennpress.bsky.social, but here’s a peek now at our table of contents!

@zackpolanski.bsky.social nails it: "Britain is not broken because of migration. Britain is broken because of inequality. Because of an economy that allows billionaires to hoard wealth while millions struggle to get by. Because of a political class that has lost its nerve and forgotten its purpose."

Excited to release the conference programme for 'Ireland and the American Revolution: 250th Anniversary Perspectives'. There are only a few tickets left, so if you would like to attend I would suggest getting one as soon as possible. Attendance is free but booking is essential.

Stay tuned for the release of a brand new, first of its kind, fully independent NYC mayor general election poll from Zenith Research (me) and Public Progress Solutions (Amit Singh Bagga) this afternoon.

More ways to cut the data of this race than you’ve seen in any previous poll.

Like the fallout from Brexit all over again: "there is the sticking point that some ingredients just aren’t grown in the U.S., nor do they have a reasonable substitute. There is no domestic cinnamon production to tap into, no American turmeric or coffee or cardamom farm big enough . . . "

"The tariffs disproportionately affect restaurants that rely on foreign ingredients, which are often cuisines that American diners expect to pay less for" This is a common take that I also see in the UK

For the record/thread: both Bob’s work&History Respawned are *essential* to the fact that we have a field called historical game studies, even if lots of historians still want to pretend it doesn’t exist. He gave me a platform to talk about RDR as a PhD student, and that matters a lot.

I wrote something new for History Respawned today. It's a review of a new book about Red Dead, but it's really about academic writing and historical game studies as a field. Please read, but also know, I really really really really REALLY didn't want to write this review.

I promised myself I would never write a negative book review. I promised my PhD advisor I would never write a negative book review. I promised I would always find a silver lining in any piece of aca...

WHY is there an AI summary of my book when the book hasn’t been published and information about it is not yet available on the press website? What fresh hell is this?

We often forget the real victims of GenAI.

Like, spare a thought for Inigo Montoya out there now trying to find the six-fingered man who killed his father.

What he once thought was a lone killer is now a massive conspiracy.

From the parliamentary report on Iran. Just quickly — does anyone know if the UK has places that teach languages to a high level, and if so, what the government policy on them is?
The committee cites evidence of over-bureaucratic structures within Whitehall and a lack of expertise. One witness told the committee: “If you have people running policy in the Foreign Office who don’t speak a word of Persian then that is a fat lot of good to be honest.”
