‘Thanks to journalists such as Anas al-Sharif and his colleagues who risked their lives, for over six hundred days the genocide has been live-streamed for the world to see. And yet we are told we must wait for the experts.’

“Palestinian journalists like Anas al-Sharif have been able to tell their own people’s story directly to the world. And Israel is methodically killing them for it, while many of their Western colleagues and international journalistic institutions remain shamefully silent”— my latest @theguardian.com

AL JAZEERA: "The order to assassinate Anas Al Sharif, one of Gaza’s bravest journalists, and his colleagues, is a desperate attempt to silence the voices exposing the impending seizure and occupation of Gaza.”

Alex de Waal tells @IChotiner that even if humanitarian aid now reaches Gaza, probably thousands of Palestinian children "have got to that stage of severe acute malnutrition where their bodies just can’t digest food."

All happening on the world's watch.

My latest for @ecfr looks at efforts to find 100s of 1000s of Iraqis who are missing. Many are believed to be in mass graves. #Iraq has so many mass graves it has a specialized directorate. It even has a Mass Graves Day.Every number is a person who was part of a family that is integral to a community

Syria’s Alawite communities assembled lists of the dead from three days of killing in March. Pro-government forces looted, burned or vandalized homes, leaving behind menacing graffiti such as this message in the village of Sonobar: 'You were a minority and now you are a rarity' reut.rs/44rr1Tc

My latest for The New Yorker looks at the capabilities of the Lebanese army, and how and why they have historically been limited, amid rising calls to disarm Hezbollah #lebanon

In Lebanon, calls for Hezbollah’s disarmament are rising—but the party’s secretary-general, Sheikh Naim Qassem, has said that it won’t give up its arms in the face of continued Israeli aggression.
Who Gets the Guns in Lebanon?
As the Lebanese Army tries to assert its authority in the war-torn south, calls to disarm Hezbollah are rising.

This is what passes as a ‘ceasefire’ in sth #Lebanon, where there are near daily Israeli attacks without a word from US & French ceasefire monitors. UN peacekeepers have clocked more than 2,600 Israeli airspace violations, 1,400 military activities & more than 60 airstrikes during the ‘ceasefire'

Amnesty has long warned of double standards undermining the rules-based order, and the impact of this reached new depths in 2024.
"Events of the past 12 months – not least Israel’s livestreamed but unheeded genocide of Palestinians in Gaza – have laid bare just how hellish the world can be for so many when the most powerful states jettison international law and disregard multilateral institutions." - Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International’s Secretary General.

#Israel targets a school in #Beirut, when students are in class during a ceasefire it has violated ~1000 times & killed abt 100 ppl without a peep from US & French-led truce monitoring mechanism. Israeli threat today has ppl scrambling to get kids from school, leave work, traffic jams

Witkoff, who told Tucker Carlson he’s pretty sure Lebanon will normalize with an Israel that is still occupying Lebanese territory and has killed more than 100 Lebanese during the ‘ceasefire,’ basically because Trump wants it to. An Israeli drone is over Beirut today….

BBC Security Correspondent Frank Gardner is one of the UK’s most experienced & knowledgable journalists.

His disdain for Witkoff is a joy:

“Steve Witkoff isn't a professional negotiator, he knows very little about foreign affairs. He’s a New York property tycoon who plays golf with Donald Trump.”

These are just ppl who have been ID'ed by rescue & health workers who are also being killed in unprecedented numbers despite their targeting being a war crime. UN says 1000s more are dead under the rubble. As UN’s Tom Fletcher noted, in Gaza dogs are “fat” b/c they feed on corpses. Min. 50,000 dead
