“Close examination finds no evidence of safety risks for single-stairway buildings with sprinklers…fire death rates in modern single-stairway 4-6 story apartment buildings in New York City were no different from those in other residential buildings”

As a kid, I used to look at LA retail spaces from the 70’s/80’s & think, “why would anyone use glass block?”

Now that I’m an architect, I look at projects like these & understand it’s really about the talent of the designer & contractor. I’d love to see glass block used more. #architecture #design

What a brain dead piece. Yeah, liberty thrives in an environment where the government lets you do exactly one thing with your property? Where an inminban of your most psychotic neighbors monitors you 24/7, and charges you a fee for the privilege? Get a grip.

I still don’t understand the argument against building the “15-minute city”. Everyone (rich, poor, young, and old) should be able to have walking access to the spaces that enrich our lives.

Blue cities have an odd preference for a romanticized idea of “process” over tangible outcomes. Lengthy approval times for building permits are a glaring example. Communities receive no benefits, only harms, from this endless bureaucracy.
It took 1,000+ days to get this 200+ unit downtown apartment building’s land use permit approved. What is the point of the land use permit anyway? The construction permits are approved in 250 days and cover all the life safety, energy, and structural requirements. Why do we need land use permits?

Very thankful for the hard work of the firefighters under terrible conditions, and for the firefighters coming in now from out of state.

Angelenos need to have an honest conversation about housing & infrastructure.

At this point, there’s no way we can justify rebuilding in some of the areas affected by the wildfires. That requires mass densification of DTLA, Mid-Town, some areas in East LA & South LA. #losangeles

The outcome of this lawsuit will have broad ramifications for movements facing state surveillance and repression today.

A huge share of the housing California has built over the past 50 years has been in disaster-prone areas. There's no sustainable alternative to making it easier to build more infill housing.
Built:LA has a map of building ages from 1890 to 1908. Note the upper development was mostly built in the 1970s and 1980s, but more were added in the 1990s and 2000s. Adding homes up and up the canyons

Catfiddle St in Charleston was built less than 15 years ago, during a time when most developments in the metro consisted of strip malls and cul-de-sacs. It’s proof that we can create beautiful walkable neighborhoods again—neighborhoods that welcome people of all incomes and backgrounds.

One soft skill the goes under-appreciated that I personally want to get stronger in is being curious enough to ask questions.

My team members who are inquisitive enough to ask great questions tend to be the better Architects/ Designers.

I’m a huge fan of Kevin Tsai Architects. They’ve been doing a lot of affordable housing using Los Angeles’ Executive Directive 1 (ED1).

Their designs are extremely creative. Here are a few of my favorites:

Iranian Multi-Family Architecture is so good!

This building (The Darya) is located in Tehran & is designed by Hooba.

Design-wise, I appreciate the effort in trying to reflect light into the interior spaces using the copper paneling. Also, I love the spacious floor plan layouts as well.
