We should be furious, and we should act!

1. Write your representatives. 2. Demand they defend home rule.
3. Demand they reject laws that strip autonomy, punish youth unjustly, disenfranchise our residents.

Notice the moral hypocrisy!

We talk about “taxation without representation,” civil rights, democratic norms - yet for over 700,000 people in DC, many of these laws show that representation is conditional and rights are negotiable. That’s not equal citizenship!

Demonstrating precedence for more federal overreach: If Congress can override DC’s local laws - laws passed by people elected by DC residents - what’s stopping similar overreach in other cities and states? Once that door cracks, it doesn’t close easily.

Racial & justice implications- DC is majority Black and brown. Systemic over-criminalization of youth, especially among communities of color, has tons of evidence showing harsher penalties lead to worse outcomes (more recidivism, trauma, less chance for rehabilitation). Ignoring that damages lives.

This disenfranchises the people - Whether it’s taking away non-citizen voting rights, limiting local input over judges (who interpret laws that affect people every day), or imposing adult sentences on young people, these moves remove voice, choice, and local accountability.

This undermines Home Rule - DC was granted local decision-making via the Home Rule Act. These bills and actions strip away what little autonomy DC has over its laws, courts, policing, and youth justice.

What are we up against?

✔️Overriding DC’s youth justice laws (letting 14-year-olds be tried as adults).
✔️Forcing federal control over local policing & courts.
✔️Blocking non-citizens from voting in local elections.
✔️Gutting DC’s sanctuary protections.

Last night, I found myself dancing on Georgia Ave to a live go-go band surrounded by people of all ages and backgrounds moving to the same beat. The energy was electric! Pure joy, pure DC.
