emerging artist Olafur Eliasson made drawings on his artist/sailor/dad's boat by suspending pens over paper greg.org/archive/2024...
a dense tangle of pen lines with concentrations in various colors–pink, blue, highlighter yellow, black, brown, a green—under where the pens were suspended on strings like pendulums, marking the paper as the boat they were on voyaged somewhere off the icelandic coast. a drawing from 1998 by olafur eliasson and his artist/sailor/dad elias hjörleifsson, being sold in denmark at bruun-rasmussen in june 2024 a 1999 snapshot of a pendulum drawing apparatus on an icelandic fishing boat. a tabletop made of a flattened cardboard box is pushed into a corner and taped to the wood paneling. five pens of different colors or models dangle from strings that extend out of the image. each pen tip barely touches the piece of paper on the apparatus, which is partially filled with little clouds of marks in a variety of colors, made as the ship rides the ocean waves. via olafur eliasson dot net

Genre mashups should be easy peasy with interpolatable archives, but mashups too are 30 years old by now. Aesthetic Late Stage Postmodernism etc.

I'm pretty confident we will be stuck with this for a while.

I think the wild ride of the past 70 years was an excemption, where electronics added whole dimensions to producable sounds, and that came to an end sometime 20 years ago or so.

If you listen to electronic music now, it is impossible to say if that was produced now, 2010 or 2000.
rawx.bsky.social
The new experiments are there, but they seem stale in comparison to aesthetic wild hoops from 60s to 90s, going from rock to aphex twin. Algorave from the 2010s for instance is just glitchy electronica, long done before. Contemporary punk very much sounds like 80s hardcore, etc.
rawx.bsky.social
Discovery of sound spaces are futile since Aphex Twin 😉

I actually mean that half serious: Pop has ever more diffentiated generating genre and subgenres in fractal ways, innovations going incrementally smaller.

We just explored sonic latent space.

Btw, i trace the 80s nostalgia back to as early as 1996, with i-F Space Invaders kickstarting the fusion of 80s electro sounds with detroit techno. (Electro always was part of techno, but that track went near-mainstream). youtu.be/tIAZTV_sYtk?...

Another explanation is that avant garde often produces artifacts for a subcultural scene to be seen and understood, with socmed very much destroying subcultural avant garde communication, where everything is immediate leaving no room for experimentation.
rawx.bsky.social
Thie is going on since mid 2000s, with the neverending nostalgia for the 80s being my go to example.

Corporate consolidation surely plays its part, but i think there's simpler explanations, one being that lowering entry for music production discovered low hanging fruit of sound aesthetics.

AI-Dunning Kruger variant found: "Interaction with sycophantic AI models ... reduced participants' willingness to ... repair interpersonal conflict, while increasing their conviction of being in the right."
wolvendamien.bsky.social
Preliminary results show that the current framework of "AI" makes ppl less likely to help or seek help from other humans, or to seek to soothe conflict, and that people actively prefer that framework to any others, literally serving to make them more dependent on it.
Sycophantic AI Decreases Prosocial Intentions and Promotes Dependence
Both the general public and academic communities have raised concerns about sycophancy, the phenomenon of artificial intelligence (AI) excessively agreeing with or flattering users. Yet, beyond isolat...

Formal term would be freudian "narcissistic injury" under platform conditions of heightened sensibility to social feedback (likes and shares) and context collapse, with a need for "coherence before an audience". You threat that coherence, you get road rage, creating an self radicalization spiral.
rawx.bsky.social
Snowflakery and Outrage are more similar to road rage than informed-but-angry "letters to the editor".
rawx.bsky.social
No formal term, but one argument that comes to mind is that our socmed spaces exist inside personal space. We always carry around our phones and the news feeds are within the same space as feeds from our family and loved ones. An attack in that space is always an attack "on my lawn".

Being right on the internet follows a Gartner hype cycle:

- Make claim
- Everyone disagrees
- Provide evidence
- "Well ACTUALLY it's more complicated"
- Trough of nuance
- Five years later someone gets credited for your idea
- You're still mad about it

Yeah yeah, unreality and simulacra, ontological doubt and all, but Baudrillard did not predict giant ducklings at a filmset in a pool.
