Saw this on twitter. I totally agree with this. I've seen many papers that failed to cite something important from another field or subfield of study. Many researchers these days are very focused on their own field and don't have time to learn the advances in another field.

Screenshot of a tweet: If we (researchers) have the time and commitment to learn from disciplines beyond our own, we would see fewer papers beginning with "No research has been done" or "little has been done" and more that start with "we are building on" or "we want to look at this differently"

When it comes to platform governance, we must reframe the conversation towards mandating transparency and accountability, with a specific focus on the internal recommendation engines, writes Tech Policy Press contributing editor Amber Sinha:

Big Tech's current self-regulatory practices fail to meet the requisite criteria for effective and meaningful self-governance, writes Amber Sinha.

Fringe Democracy and the Platformization of the Public Sphere

ABSTRACT
This article introduces the concept of «fringe democracy» as a multidimensional phenomenon emerging in the contemporary public sphere when alternative digital platforms (spaces/affordances/governance patterns), marginalized actors (groups/practices/ideologies), and heterodox narratives (contents/imaginaries/representations) challenge liberal democratic processes. Fringe democracy is not merely about the rise of non-mainstream platforms but arises from complex interactions between fringe and mainstream platforms, actors, and narratives (as shown by recent changes in mainstream platform moderation practices, which reduce fringe actors’ dependence on alternative, freer spaces). While some marginalized actors may propose heterodox narratives driven by democratic values, fringe democracy functions as a form of pseudo-democracy from the margins, [...]

Jane Caro: “Education is used by the rest of the world to at least try to break down the class system.

Almost alone in the developed world, Australia is using it to build one.” @janecaro.bsky.social

If we’re not careful, generative AI could become a weapon reactionary forces use to dismantle liberal democracy. We must urgently foster education and harness AI in defense of it. 🧪 #AcademicSky

That part of JRG has been removed. But TESQA want accountability around student success so most internal uni processes to track student progression (developed or improved due to the 50% pass part of JRG) are still in place

From Times HE "Australia’s opposition will review university fees, reintroduce the “50 per cent pass rule”, reclaim veto rights on research grants, regulate vice-chancellors’ salaries and “leave no stone unturned” to stamp out campus antisemitism if it wins the forthcoming federal election.

So Dutton used a family trust to hide assets and minimize tax payable on buying and selling millions in properties but wants the people that can least afford it to use their super for a home ownership, that ruins their long game for retirement but Dutton will be just fine with his mega millions! 🤯

A tweet by Khoa Vu (@KhoaVuUmn) features a humorous meme.

The meme’s central image is a cropped detail from an old, likely medieval, painting. The painting shows a woman in a red robe wielding a hammer, seemingly attacking a dark, demon-like figure labeled as "Data". The text "Researcher" is written above the woman.  The humor of the image comes from the juxtaposition of the aggressive, forceful portrayal of data in relation to the usual connotation of "we let the data speak for itself," which is meant to imply a more detached and objective approach to analysis.

Above the image, the tweet states "Researcher: "We let the data speak for itself."" and "Earlier that day:".  This sets up the contrast between what the researcher *says* and the reality of their struggle with the data's complexities, as visually portrayed in the image.
