Anti-social social scientist with low amusement threshold. When you do theoretical mathematical demography it's good to have a Plan B so I ride a bike.

My goodness, that's pretty close to what pop projection was like when I first started having to do them. I don't miss those days at all.

Fertility in the US has been "below replacement level" since 2000. How much lower is the US population today than it was in 2000?

We've been bouncing btw Berkeley and Paris for the last 25 years. The change in Paris in the last 5 years has been remarkable. The street of the nearby elementary school was just converted; a side-effect is my street is busier because of detouring traffic but that's an acceptable compromise.

I suppose it's good that some Trump supporters draw the line at calling out the National Guard to police cities he doesn't like but it kinda means they didn't think the racism, misogyny, cruelty, corruption, and incompetence were deal breakers so there's that.

In the US the TFR has been "below replacement" for pretty much every year of the last 25 years. How much lower is the US population today than it was in 2000?

The next time someone shows a graphic that shows that the TFR has been less than "replacement level" since about 2000, ask them how much lower today's pop is than it was in 2000.

No one could have foreseen that choosing that kid from Twilight Zone's "It's a Good Life" would have negative consequences.

Sounds like something I should've learned.

I'm mostly retired now so I'm in charge of cleaning. Magali isn't completely happy with my cleanliness standard so she hired housekeepers to do some things where I'm (evidently) deficient. They came yesterday. I agree I haven't been doing this.

What matters more is the last place you attend--though for many, the first place is the last.

"Civility of discourse" is ideal but there's often power asymmetry in who gets to decide what's civil; and if people don't use evidence to make decisions, presenting evidence won't get them to change their minds.

I literally did this (a series of church-based “listening sessions” on abortion) and it wasn’t safe 15 years ago. I can’t imagine how terrifying it would be now.
I was naive and fearless and I wish someone had told me not to do it.

A program in Flint, MI, gave $1,500 to any/all pregnant people and $500/month for the first year of their infant’s life.

Among the benefits, those babies experienced lower rates of prematurity and low birth weight, which resulted in fewer NICU admissions, saving the city of Flint $6.2 million/year.
