seeing @wiscon.bsky.social announcements for this year start to go out reminds me that while bouncing around in our archive I've found some really charming news reporting on early WisCons from Wisconsin Public Television

My soft sci-fi novella, THE LEGEND LIMINAL, is out today from @starsandsabers.bsky.social! 💫

Climb into the camper van for a surreal roadtrip that slides out of time & reality. TLL is a story about grief, hope, and the shining lifeline of human connection.

Ren holds up a copy of The Legend Liminal, with an empty desert highway in the background. The cover of the book features a camper van driving on a road shaped like an infinity symbol, in front of a vaporwave-style sunset. The cover of The Legend Liminal by Ren Hutchings is superimposed on an image of an empty desert highway, surrounded by text that says:

➜ Surreal contemporary speculative novella
➜ A slip out of time & reality
➜ Friends on a fateful roadtrip
➜ An unsettling liminal world
➜ A mysterious spooky cat
➜ Messy sibling relationships
➜ Vibes: Donnie Darko meets FINNA
➜ Navigating grief & finding lifelines in one another

I love having a favorite Arthurian side character. a full millenia of intermittent mentions with wildly variable characterization to get excited about. a book will be like 'he is not appearing in this text, because he's off fixing the drains' and I'm like 'classic my guy! he IS fixing the drains!'

ahhh I'm so glad you've been enjoying it!

deepest of deep breaths

feeling nervous about this one, friends! I've written about the mainstreaming of pull-to-publish, its impact on fandom, and what it means for an increasingly corporate and IP-driven creative landscape.

I'm really excited to try and diagram out a chronological order of 'when' things 'happen' in Hexwood and end up looking like the meme of the guy with the stringboard

It's always hard to keep our rule not to look ahead and NEVER HARDER than in this episode. Hexwood when?!?

thank you all so much for all the amazing questions you've sent in for our Q&A!!

FOR THE RECORD, although we planned to record that ep today, life events plus the realization that people might have thoughts about the shorts has caused us to reschedule for NEXT THURSDAY 9/25
rebeccafraimow.bsky.social
spoiler but that was our favorite of the set for sure
rebeccafraimow.bsky.social
I know that the sort of lingering WWI trauma hanging over the book is one of the things that @epbirdsall.bsky.social was reading for -- it's pointedly pulled out (relevantly but very unsubtly IMO) in the recent musical version that we saw
rebeccafraimow.bsky.social
you know what I DO think there's a direct line to be drawn between Gatsby and Swordspoint
rebeccafraimow.bsky.social
I also like how strangely like a fairy-tale it is -- the valley of ashes, the big castle and the glittering parties that all disappear in the morning. it's not surprising to me that sff authors in particular keep being drawn towards retellings; the book in itself is almost a fantasy novel
rebeccafraimow.bsky.social
one of the things tbh that I keep stumbling over in retellings and adaptations is versions of Nick that seem to take him at face value as the way he tells us he is, and that he so clearly is not
