Finally got the chance to meet this guy last week. A completely unique and haunting cross from Riasg Buidhe, Colonsay, in the gardens of Colonsay House. Its dating remains up for debate, ranging from the 7th to the 10th century AD www.trove.scot/image/384171

The Minster Lovell Jewel

Perhaps from the same workshop as the Alfred Jewel, the gold and cloisonné enamel Minster Lovell Jewel may also be an 'aestel' (a manuscript pointer used to follow text) from the reign of Alfred of Wessex, c. AD 871-899.

This is a copy of the medieval Nuremberg chronicle... I love how they unabashedly depict the world through a German lens. This picture is meant to be ancient biblical city of Nineveh 😂 I imagine the scribe instructing the illustrator said something like: “Think Mesopotamia, but make it Munich”

Celebrating their 600th anniversary, I attended the London Guildhall Library’s Summer Soirée today. They brought out some of the most amazing items from the archives, including this fabulous chained bible - it belonged to the medieval guild of ‘Tylers and Brickmakers’, who used it to swear oaths on
