REC is a group of NY residents and other citizens formed to address serious environmental health and quality of life problems associated with Waste Connection's Dunn C&D Landfill.

The Dunn C&D Landfill, owned by Texas-based Waste Connections, is the largest of its kind in NYS. This gigantic 99-acre industrial operation is located near residential neighborhoods in both Rensselaer and East Greenbush, and is immediately adjacent to the Rensselaer City School District Campus.
Don’t you want to know what is going into the air from the Dunn Landfill? It can’t possibly be good to be breathing it. Since the State of New York is supposed to protect people you have ask why they don’t do the testing to find out what is inhaled by the kids in the school. Here is one answer $$$

New videos posted at stopdunn.org. This 3 minute plus video shows the school and the landfill in October.

How could the State ever think such a location would be safe for the kids going to that school? Go to stopdunn.org to see more videos.

Resolution from Rensselaer County (NY) Legislature, but mums the word from DEC and Gov. Holding firm on their socially irresponsible decision to place a landfill next to a school and to consistently continue its operation in spite of all the documented opposition from all areas of the community.

A beautiful article by @freshwaterhabitats.bsky.social on the critical importance of these delicate waters, and the work the Trust is doing to support them. A really lovely read:

This issue has received attention in the race for county executive, county legislators, Rensselaer Common Council, Rensselaer Mayor and East Greenbush Town Board. NY needs to reverse its socially irresponsible actions in approving and allowing its continuation with what amounts to self supervision.

Want to see what’s going on next to the school and your neighborhood brought to you compliments of NYS and your “good neighbor”, Waste Connections Dunn Landfill?

How did this happen? The song “Money Changes Everything” by Cindy Lauper sums up a lot of it!

This is pretty unbelievable - I really thought landfill leachate was better managed.
Liquid oozing from landfill + industrial waste + sewage - treated for pathogens then split, the solid part spread on farmland, the liquid part released into rivers - what could go wrong?

Thousands of tonnes of toxic landfill liquid added to sewage and spread on English farms
Exclusive: Leachate is tankered to treatment works where it mixes with sewage and industrial effluent

Innovative Strategies for Managing Landfill Leachate Challenges
Landfills serve as the final destination for a significant portion of the waste generated by society. However, the decomposition of organic waste in these landfills generates a potentially hazardous liquid known as leachate. This leachate is a complex mixture of organic and inorganic compounds, and its management poses serious challenges for environmental safety and public health. The release of leachate into the surrounding environment can contaminate groundwater and soil, potentially causing long-term damage to ecosystems.

Annually, millions of gallons of toxic landfill water (leachate) ends up ($$$) in municipal wastewater treatment plants along the Hudson. Improperly remediated, the diluted syrup is then dumped into the river.
