Probably the same as last time. Money can be spent wiser but a bike shed is very usable and needed
rewildingire.bsky.social
Money could definitely be spent wiser by Government but;

1) Things cost money - would rather they be built well to last
2) We accept hidden costs without a whimper

“The Office of Public Works spends around €1.2 million every year leasing car parking... spaces for the Revenue Commissioners cost over €100,000 annually. Parking for Leinster House itself runs to a similar figure each year. These are recurring bills, quietly signed off without any outrage”

Those outraged by a €100k bike shed should look at the annual cost of renting out car park spaces

Fascinating study on historical nest items in Bearded Vulture nests by Margalida et al

"Even more surprising was that several items were well over 600 years old, according to carbon-14 dating. Results from one shoe dated back to around 675 years ago"

Bearded Vulture nests found to have hoards of cultural artifacts—some up to 650 years old
Many people have probably seen birds picking up small pieces of man-made materials, like strips of a plastic bag or paper litter, and taking them into their nest. This behavior appears to be fairly wi...

The biggest ecological issue for rewilding is the alteration to the nutrient cycle.

The biggest social issue for rewilding is opposition to the idea from local community groups who feel it will exclude them.

The biggest online issue is yer dad who says we aren't ready for wolves yet.

There's no two ways of putting this;

Nature in Ireland is fucked and our ambition for restoration does not go far enough.

We also have to make hard choices where we will lose somethings to make space for others because of climate and anthropogenic impacts.

There is no easy answer to this.

Ireland’s nature is in a “very poor” state, with the country’s economic growth achieved at the expense of the environment, according to the EU’s State of Europe’s Environment report. We’re running out of wake-up calls! www.irishtimes.com/ireland/2025...

Feel like this is applicable to Irish ecology also.

"OK but rewild"
drkatemarvel.bsky.social
my takeaway from climate week nyc is that "climate storytelling" is a little too much "we must reimagine our deepest souls in relationship to mother nature and the moral abyss of the polycrisis into which we must now stare" and not enough "ok but get a heat pump"

Still interested in any expert confirming squirrel and not other rodent/mammal

@irishwoodlandtrust.bsky.social
david-smyth-eco.bsky.social
Would normally say its a squirrel seeing this in a woodland.

BUT

This is in an isolated woodland complex 20km away from nearest population of reds with treeless landscape between.

Anybody able to shed some light?

There's a limit to how much you can punch nature before it punches back.

Wild, native plants growing in rivers are not litter and don't need to be 'cleaned'.

After farm pollution, digging up rivers is the biggest reason for poor health of rivers in Ireland.

It's 17 years since I've been on the beautiful Lough Carra, and the unusual white marl that gives the water a distinctive turquoise look is sadly looking very green now on foot of nutrient pollution.

Another treasure being slowly lost to us all.

The latest copy of the brilliant
@irishwoodlandtrust.bsky.social magazine has arrived, as usual crammed with great articles.

To get active in the fight for Irish nature and forests, you couldn't do better than to join both them and the @irishwildlifetrust.bsky.social.

The health and integrity of a habitat is crucial to its resilience against invasive species such as Rhododendron as demonstrated by the lack of rhododendron present in this very wet blanket bog in Coill mór, Conamara vs old conifer plantation (which would have been drained). Pics from same spot

The EU wants to roll back vital environmental protections - and they're asking for your opinion. Today is the LAST DAY to speak up before it's too late. Almost 200k of us have signed, have you?

It takes only seconds to tell them to keep their Hands OFF Nature!!
