Triton is the largest natural satellite of Neptune. Thought to be a Kuiper Belt object captured by Neptune’s gravity millions of years ago, Triton is unlike any other major moon in that it has a retrograde orbit. It’s also geologically active and contains a subsurface ocean.

the two beautiful new jwst images of galaxies we got this week 🌌
The galaxy is a very oblong, blue disk that extends from left to right at an angle (from about 10 o’clock to 5 o’clock). The galaxy has a small bright core at the centre. There is a clear inner disk that has speckles of stars scattered throughout. The outer disk of the galaxy is whiteish-blue, and clumpy, like clouds in the sky. A spiral galaxy with a wide, oval-shaped disc. It has a shining spot at the centre from which two curving, pale red spiral arms emerge, wrapping once each around the galaxy. They’re surrounded by a whirl of bright threads and patches of dust, with spots of star formation scattered throughout. The glow of the disc fades smoothly into the background where some patches of dust can be seen, as well as foreground stars.

Hubble image of 30 Doradus. Pale pink and blue nebula clouds surrounding a central cavity dominate the image. Intermixed are dark, dusty cloud-like structures. In the center is a bright cluster of pink, white, and orange stars which are partially obscured by the surrounding nebula. There is a bright orange star, with Hubble's characteristic 4-pointed star shape, in the central cavity at the same location as the bright star seen in the JWST image, but it is not nearly as bright or prominent. JWST image of 30 Doradus. Tan-colored nebula clouds with rust-colored highlights surround a black central area containing a bright cluster of sparkling pale blue stars that scatter outward from a densely packed center. The shape is roughly the same as the Hubble image, but the central star cluster is less obscured. One bright yellow star stands out in the central open area, with eight long thin points.
