The esteem of one's favorite authors is truly the sweetest prize. @charlesmann.bsky.social (1491, 1493, etc.) is a maestro, and holy crap this makes my day!

Last night I read again a chunk of "Fire Weather" by @johnvaillant.bsky.social to check my notes against his reporting and holy crap this is a superb book--a vivid portrait of one of the most fascinating, least known, most important places in North America: northern Alberta. Strong recommend.

Le médecin hongrois Ignace Semmelweis fut le tout premier à préconiser le lavage des mains pour prévenir la propagation des microbes.

Dénoncé par ses collègues, il meurt le 13 août 1865 dans un asile psychiatrique.

Dr Semmelweis 1840s.
Claimed washing hands prevented deadly infections!
He was laughed at.
He was ridiculed.
He died in an asylum.
Sound familiar, America?
The preference of magic words to actual facts & science is rare.
Those making that choice historically die out quickly.
Gun culture helps too.

The reno-protective effects of SGLT2 inhibitors cannot be fully explained by their glucose-lowering actions.

Quaggin & team now show SGLT2 inhibition increases tissue levels of SAM, resulting in enhanced H3K27 trimethylation & repression of inflammatory genes: www.jci.org/articles/vie...
