A view towards The Bongs, from Crosfield Bridge above Lymm Dam, Cheshire. Bongs is thought to be a corruption of the Middle English “bonks” (slopes or hill/valley sides; possibly wooded), a word which appears in a number of northern Middle English texts including Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

We almost lost the Middle-English Poem Beowulf to fire!

Buried in the private Cotton library, the only copy of Beowulf was never truly studied.

Then in 1731, a fire destroyed Ashburnham House & most of the library. In a desperate attempt to save the codex a heroic librarian flung the smoking ⬇️
A badly burned manuscript page of the poem Beowulf. Ashburnham House, the building where the private Cotton Library was kept containing the only copy of Beowulf. It burned in 1731. Most of the books went up in flames, but a few were saved.

For #TolkienTrewsday (aka #TolkienTuesday), a video about Tolkien having a bit of a rant over a single kenning in Beowulf, that's probably been subtly mistranslated for years.

This book is so brilliant! Plus, when I wanted to write a poem in the style of Beowulf, and exhausted myself by all the intense scrutinizing and analysis involved, I took refreshing breaks by reading this, laughing with delight, and applauding in admiration!

CLASP (A Consolidated Library of Anglo-Saxon Poetry) has, among other things, a full scansion of Beowulf!

There are a several RPGs that use alliterative verse in their lore, including Elden Ring. I list them with fanfic on this information page I maintain about the use of alliterative verse in speculative fiction & related things like fanfic and games ...

One of the main ways alliterative verse has spead is through the science fiction and fantasy community. The links on this page provide a panoramic view of the creativity thus unleashed.

For the record, I don't use facebook other than for business, because they are powerful rent-seekers who have total network domination. If every user left facebook tomorrow, nobody would be happier than me.
