These scams can be convincing because perpetrators often use the names of real officials, provide actual court addresses, or manipulate caller ID to make it appear the call is coming from a government agency.

You can spend time arguing over the difference between shutting down FEMA & rebranding it but the reality is that the Trump admin has already dismantled FEMA to the point that it could not efficiently respond to a relatively small disaster in a state with a relatively large capacity EM system.

Extreme heatwaves and torrential downpours have already increased due to global warming, and even larger shifts are likely in the future. But our cities, our infrastructure, and our ways of life are predicated on the observed historical envelope of weather conditions. Are we ready?

Journalists and others, take note: this is an excellent, comprehensive, and up-to-date perspective on the still-escalating threats to NOAA beyond the NWS. NWS remains in pretty dire straits, yet the prospects for the rest of NOAA are actually even more dire (especially with respect to climate).
ICYMI: I wrote about the likely demise of the federal government's climate website (and how it's demise could be better than other end states) and why I am even more worried about the rest of NOAA beyond just NWS.
