We're excited to be hosting the @sheffielduni.bsky.social Sustainability Symposium 2025 today!

Through panel discussions featuring academics, practitioners & activists, we will be exploring how systemic change comes through true interdisciplinarity and the creation of community. #SheffSustSymp

Policymaking - developing and agreeing policies, and then implementing them - is difficult, but plenty of people (increasingly) confuse it with "coming up with ideas for policies" which is, indeed, very easy. Same philosophy that says that announcing the thing is the same as doing the thing
t0nyyates.bsky.social
Someone who thinks 'policymaking is generally not very complicated' either does not know what they are talking about or has very strong ideological leanings that help disappear the trade-offs that worry the rest of us.

Good thing he has a high quality team of thoughtful people with a firm grasp of the issues and how complex governing is

She seems nice...

"Just about every single message is about migration or grooming gangs, with a heavy focus on crimes committed by asylum seekers. “We already have British sex criminals,” one message reads. “We don’t need any more!”"

Reading the replies to this, they are variously "don't make it down to individuals", "the market will decide", "it needs government intervention".

But mainly read as "I don't want to change my lifestyle, for any reason"

Until people in the climate movement very publicly stop eating meat and flying, we're not going to seem trustworthy.

I will die on this hill.

Meat is a blind spot for people who care about climate. When I used to have dinner with my colleague Wally Broecker, the climate scientist who coined the term “global warming”, he would always order a steak.

In today’s race to the bottom news the current temporary holder of the Conservative Party leadership has said a government formed by her party would scrap the 2008 Climate Change Act.

Leaders weighing up potential electoral failure having one eye on the lucrative right wing talk circuit in the US setting their stall out now for their future career to the detriment of us all.

But we are repeatedly seeing parties scrapping decades old consensus, denying the science, making claims about the damage and ineffectiveness of ongoing programmes to chase fringe votes.

Businesses repeatedly ask for certainty when it comes to setting ambitious climate change targets, allowing them to make long term investment decisions.

To rip it up, or even threaten to, is mindless vandalism.
richsulley.bsky.social
Through the Climate Change Committee and carbon budgets it has provided a framework for successive governments to monitor progress and plan for the future.
How we will adapt to the inevitable impacts of the changed climate is also a requirement of the act.
richsulley.bsky.social
There’s not much to be added to the discussion beyond what has already been pointed out. The UK was a global leader when it drafted this legislation, it had cross party support and has driven the progress in decarbonisation and growth in green industries we have seen.

The Chancellor says airport expansion will grow the economy.

But here’s the truth: business travel is flat, and more Brits fly out than tourists fly in.

So who’s benefiting? Mostly wealthy frequent flyers.

It’s time they paid for their pollution 👉 https://bit.ly/3FXQefR

Earnest post, but: a thing I like here is it’s okay to have moments of happiness in public without being broadly scolded, and I believe that sustaining this kind of humanity will be very important as we resist fascism.

We have to sustain each other. Making joy isn’t denial, it’s how we will survive

As Labour open their annual conference, I’d be interested if anyone can share Ministers/MPs’ views on further expanding UK airport capacity; expansion that's incompatible with UK climate commitments, not to mention increased volume & frequency of aviation noise! climateuncensored.com/gatwick-expa...

That is leadership, or at least it would be.

Taking the fight to Reform UK, not reflecting their position.

We deserve better.
richsulley.bsky.social
Surely the opposite should be true. Appearing on stage with leaders from around the world showing that the problem is real and requires cooperation, distancing himself from the xenophobes, racists and scientifically illiterate.
richsulley.bsky.social
The rumour is that the Prime Minister is not going to attend COP30 because it will be ammunition for the climate change denialists in Reform UK.
