Keen but mediocre baker. Ditto gym-goer. Getting past it. Who am I try to kid? Definitely well past it. But my gym trainer did say I am fitter than many 40-year olds. So I’ll take that.

Yesterday's ryebread, sliced today. Seems to have worked well this time. Should last us until after Christmas.

Bit of a lie-in this morning, home made croissant with black cherry jam for breakfast, a bright sunny day, and no gym. What more could one ask?

Second batch of brunkage. "Only" 101 this time.

Proof, if ever proof was needed, that multitasking is no more than a theoretical concept. At lunch, I'd opened the jar of marinated herrings, and was passing the teacup to be filled. I won't go into the sordid details. Just say it wasn't as bad as spilling the bottle of red wine on the carpet.

Some of the first batch of 145 of this year's brunkage (spicy Danish Christmas biscuits).

I realised this evening that I've reached the age when a good sneeze is almost as satisfying as an orgasm.

At least the sourdough worked, even if today's croissants were a failure.

Made croissants today, the first time in more than a year. Bit of a disaster. The pastry was too soft, and the butter was too hard, so I suspect that the laminations didn't work properly. Then I let them rise for too long, and they collapsed when I egg-washed them. We'll see. ...

Have been drying off the eddos in the greenhouse for the last few weeks. Brought them in yesterday as temp was due to drop to 3 degrees. Should I dry them right off, or water sparingly and keep them just ticking over for the winter? All suggestions/advice gratefully received.

Another two loaves. That makes five this week. Is she selling them?

Sunday's sourdough and Monday's ryebread. That's enough baking for thisweek.

Euonymus alatus burning bush, very aptly named. From green in summer, it bursts into flaming red at this time of year.

But John came fifth, and received a toaster.

The second split of our old oncidium has just started flowering. I think it is o. tescoensis, but it might be o. waitrosensis. Failing that it is probably o. oonosensis.
