Fact check: nearly 70 percent of US money for Ukraine actually went to US defense industry to replenish the stocks of OLD stuff that went to Ukraine to use.

Much of which we would have paid to destroy as their lifespan expired.

Pope Francis’ letter to U.S. Bishops is incedibly powerful. This stands out to me especially. Every purported Christian faith leader who has endorsed or stood silent before Trump’s ugly immigration policies needs to be confronted with this statement.

A small moment of grace in an ugly time.

We have a piano in our house, an old Yamaha, probably circa 1960-1965. It belonged to my parents. They both played growing up, and I have pictures of them playing together before I was born, though I don’t remember them ever playing.

Jimmy Carter in 2015 on the role of money in American politics: "It violates the essence of what made America a great country in its political system. Now it’s just an oligarchy, with unlimited political bribery."

“The Constitution is whatever five people say it is” is one of those sayings that has a purpose (explaining how things are enforced and therefore function) but can also be used to obfuscate, because no, it is not whatever five people say it is. They may get their way, but they can still be wrong.

The key to economic growth isn’t tax cuts for the wealthy. The secret to prosperity is investment in American workers.

When workers have more to spend, the economy grows, and businesses create more jobs.

It’s a virtuous cycle.

Who is more humble? The scientist who looks at the universe with an open mind and accepts whatever the universe has to teach us, or somebody who says everything in this book must be considered the literal truth and never mind the fallibility of all the human beings involved?

Social Media is frequently a replication of what goes on at the hotel bar of every SF/F con in the US: A couple of writers are blathering at each other about writing and business and life, and there's a ring of people around them geeking out that they're seeing these two jabber in real time.
Not sure we’ve really processed the degree to which conversations have become a spectator sport.

Kind of a fascinating development on its own.
Others have noted it but I will too: The big reason Bluesky is so hot right now is that the people who add value to social media - the frequent posters in specific fields - are here now, talking to each other and creating the "spectator value" that draws users and attention.
