Nobody is in Charge. This is a good thing We're a sac of fluid attached to some calcium. Our entire operating system is made of lard. #nzpol This govt is a "festering cluster of corrupt, autocratic racists" Paul Enright

Given that he the compromise of compromises, I would doubt he survived to take office, HOW long did it take them to find someone sufficiently close to a zero that they didn't splinter in another 1,000 ways?

Ah Shane, good old Shane, reliable old Shane
30 years late and a gazillion braincells short

Then there's THIS bugger

"SSWs are extremely rare in the Southern Hemisphere, with only two major events documented in the past 60 years — one in 2002 and the other in 2019 — and both resulted in some of the most devastating bushfires in Australia's history"
Rare phenomenon could disrupt Australia’s weather for months
Temperatures above Antarctica have risen by 30C, in a rare event that could potentially flip Australia's spring weather for months.

Just ran out of my grasp of US Constitution from US politics class at Uni Auckland in 1969, I was taught that Speaker of the house was 3rd in line
Guessing that by that time, the US would be busily fragmenting into Cascadia, New Foundlandia, Old Mexico etc, because shit would be thoroughly fucked up

Through pure people power - with workers, faith, and community uniting - the Govt has decided to keep the Living Wage in its procurement guidelines for contracted cleaners, catering workers, and security guards.

Special mention to the many workers who stood up and organised for this win. #NZpol
LIVING WAGE SAVED
For workers employed by contractors in the core public service

Guessing that's how people like Rachel Riley do it on Countdown, utterly beyond me, and don't mention algebra 🤮
Or synesthesia between music and colour, or prosopagnosia, even for their _own_ face
The mammal mind is seriously weirder than it can imagine of itself

Kind of like I can see a pile of logs and know instantly that I can carry 4 of them to the house, lift, but not carry half a dozen, but I'll need to cut the rest or get the tractor, weight is a property of the material
But the 4 I can carry, the task taking 15 minutes is there already, in the logs
rlmrdlnz.bsky.social
I'm about to go down and sort them for the night, even though I am not there yet today, Linda says they are waiting for me by the yard, as they often do
It takes me, and them, about a week to adapt to daylight saving

Related, after 25yrs in radio, I experience time as a "physical property"
If I see a job to be done, or a nap, I will decide it will take ~40min, set a timer, and most often be packing up when the timer goes
I can also, fairly reliably answer "what time is it" within 5min
Weirdly, my cows do it too

I'm as sick of saying it as you probably are of saying it but IF YOU'RE NOT A PROFESSIONAL THIEF, ANY INDUSTRY THAT CAN'T SURVIVE WITHOUT STEALING OTHER PEOPLE'S GOODS AND SERVICES DESERVES TO DIE.

Yep, any number up to ~10,000 I can also do Roman Numerals but I can only calculate with Arabic and then only to maybe 12 ie "see 3, now add 4, how many is that?"
I can also see and visualise collections of items up to about 7, after which they become "2 lots of 4 or 5"
OTOH, I am mostly crap at art

With my cows there is a clear difference between how they interact with each other and with me, and I spend time trying to think myself into their state of mind
for example when a calf is born I name her, and her mother "knows" her name before the calf does
feels like a cognitive continuum

Thanks for continuing this, if I am being too nosy, just say and I'm done
But if you can. When you do see an apple in the shop, before you pick it up or bite it, do you know it's an apple? Is there a mechanism to which you have access that tells you, "apple"
This whole thing fascinates me because

Overtly, noisily, correctly, Newsom is anti-Trump and doing a pretty good job

Also Newsom, anti-trans and, despite multiple public judgements that Israel is committing genocide, schools must not talk about that

Maddening bedfellows

Paul Krugman OTOH, is both inside the beast, and rather more succinct about what he believes is going on
"the recent runup in gold prices is telling us something — namely, that the world is losing faith in America"
Swap "faith" for "trust" and we are there, also here

Now it’s hard to pin down exactly what investors fear, perhaps because they aren’t sure themselves. But many previously inconceivable possibilities are now quite conceivable given the Trump administration’s radicalism. Runaway inflation hidden by rigged official statistics? Expropriation of the reserves of governments Trump doesn’t like? Forced conversion of foreign assets into 100-year bonds? Given the administration’s record so far, how confident are you that none of these things could possibly happen?

As I said at the top of this piece, I normally pay don’t pay much attention to gold, which doesn’t play an important role in the modern economy. But I believe that the recent runup in gold prices is telling us something — namely, that the world is losing faith in America.

And perhaps Ken Griffin’s warnings are also telling us that even ultra-rich hedge fund titans are starting to worry about the monster they helped create. Screenshot of text

RNZ treating a 50% increase in gold price this year as if it was nothing more than "a financial play", blithering on about ETF's and physical gold markets being "dark arts" and other BS
Why are gold prices surging?
Prices have surged 50 percent in 2025 alone, marking the metal's biggest rally since the 1970s.

On further thought, I also use something like a vibe for seeing things on the property without actually looking
dock and "know" there is a tarweed "over there" but then have to look for it to pull it out
Tho that may just be 14 years of walking the place every day so the detail of the map is high

I don't think people fully understand how remarkable this is. In 2024 China was installing the equivalent of five large nuclear power plants worth of wind and solar every single week. Now look at 2025.
dcrinyyc.bsky.social
There are dozens of charts just like this one across the vast swaths of transportation & energy. If you're living in an 1800s technology pipeline world, you're living in a delusion.
China installed more than twice as much solar capacity in the first half of 2025 as the rest of the world combined
rlmrdlnz.bsky.social
Must admit I struggle to get that level of particularity from a vibe, for me a vibe is knowing, without necessarily being able to say why, that checking the udder of a new 350kg cow right now would NOT be a good idea
Thanks for giving it a try

I'm with you, just because it's the ONLY tool they are prepared to consider, doesn't mean a damned thing
On a $600k mortgage that is $58/week

The average RW voter in any country of your choice, choosing, CHOOSING to do again the very thing that blew up in their faces last time
