On top of everything else, the comedy history nerd in me loves Kimmel even more this morning for this deep cut, a cut on a scale so immense as to dwarf any previous such cut in the history of man.
The image is a tweet by Dave Statter about Kimmel's opening line when he returned to ABC last night. "I know it's not the Kimmel news of the night, but I wonder how many reporting on the talk show host's return recognize that his opening line was an homage to Jack Paar. ‘As I was saying before I was interrupted,’ was Paar's opening line upon his return after walking off the Tonight Show for seven weeks in 1960 following NBC censors cutting a joke about a water closet (bathroom). His last line before walking out and leaving the show to sidekick Hugh Downs was, 'There must be a better way of making a living than this. When he came back Paar said, "I looked and there isn't.'"

A paragraph from this MIT study, which I read with my own two eyes, and you should, too.
One of the most prominent effects of using AI in writing is the shift in how students engage
with the material. Generative AI can generate content on demand, offering students quick
drafts based on minimal input. While this can be beneficial in terms of saving time and
offering inspiration, it also impacts students' ability to retain and recall information, a key
aspect of learning. When students rely on AI to produce lengthy or complex essays, they
may bypass the process of synthesizing information from memory, which can hinder their
understanding and retention of the material. For instance, while ChatGPT significantly
improved short-term task performance, such as essay scores, it did not lead to significant
differences in knowledge gain or transfer [55]. This suggests that while AI tools can
enhance productivity, they may also promote a form of "metacognitive laziness," where
students offload cognitive and metacognitive responsibilities to the AI, potentially hindering
their ability to self-regulate and engage deeply with the learning material [55]. AI tools that
generate essays without prompting students to reflect or revise can make it easier for
students to avoid the intellectual effort required to internalize key concepts, which is crucial
for long-term learning and knowledge transfer [55]

Taking a swing at including these "AI"/LLM examples in my syllabi this semester. Good conversations so far with future teachers about the relationship between using LLMs and what it means to be "professional" as a teacher.

OpenAI's "moonshot" for education includes the creation of something it calls "study mode." The thing about study mode is that it's a complete f'ing joke.
I prompt ChatGPT in study mode to write the first paragraph of an essay about 1984 for me. It does so upon my second request, with no context provided. The fact that I ignore its questions doesn't matter in the slightest.

Any Vonnegut fans out there? I re-read Player Piano with a couple friends recently and it's worth your time. Vonnegut predicted a good chunk of our current "AI" conversation and has some wisdom to share, I think.

Here's a concise summary and review: www.reddit.com/r/Vonnegut/c...
