I know a little bit about civil engineering. Occasional bridge review and road safety audit opinions.

“The only thing that works in practice is science. If we know that fatal accidents are mainly because of kinetic energy, then it is necessary to make the kinetic energy smaller.”👍

More to do but Warsaw making significant progress in reducing road danger through its commitment to Vision Zero.
In Warsaw, Falling Road Deaths Signal a Traffic Safety Turnaround
After street changes and policy reforms, the Polish capital is touting its progress in meeting ‘Vision Zero’ safety goals, with fatalities dropping by half in a decade.

“Left-Turn Calming”. New intersection curbs “harden” the centerline so drivers have to approach the opposite crosswalk at a wider angle instead of cutting across the intersection diagonally. Goal is slower turning speeds and better visibility of pedestrians.

Since we all know driver behavior is the key reducing crashes and not the clothes a person is wearing while walking in public, this should encourage you:
Raised crosswalks can reduce pedestrian crashes by 45%. The reason is simple -- they slow down drivers.

Ok hear me out.

What if we just made streets that caused less accidents?

No studies, no consultant merry go rounds. Just do the things that clearly work elsewhere, as rapidly as possible.

Sure, we know slip lanes are disastrously bad for #pedestrian safety, but have you considered double slip lanes instead?

Okay; this is the type of engineering that makes me question things. Concrete on top of catch basin? Sure. But 20' of sidewalk dead ending into either a tree or just nothingness seems an odd choice.

On May 9, 1980, the MV Summit Venture struck the Sunshine Skyway’s south span, causing a collapse. The bridge was nine years old.

No amount of infrastructure funding can stop a bridge struck by a container ship from collapsing. I’m already seeing claims to the contrary.

The Woodbridge Cloverleaf interchange was the first of it's kind in the United States. Opened in 1929 at US 1 and NJ 35 in Woodbridge Township, NJ; remained in operation until redesigned in 2008 when it became past its point of operational functionality.

Once upon a time, the ever-evolving graffiti on this reservoir near the psych unit was a cave-painting-record. I photographed much of it over months.
One day they painted it grey. The next day:
