Is it too much to say in this time, in America, that we are on a train bound for hell? If that seems extreme, can we at least ask the question: Where is this train headed? My latest reflection: "A Big Beautiful Train."

"My mission of being in the heart of the people is not just a part of my life or a badge I can take off. Instead, it is something I cannot uproot from my being without destroying my very self. I am a mission on this earth; that is the reason I am here in this world."--Pope Francis

There is every indication that Pope Leo XIV could follow Pope Francis’ embrace of liberation theology, a politically tinged movement that emerged in the 1970s and championed the liberation from social, political and economic oppression as a path to salvation.
Liberation theologians in Latin America express hope for Pope Leo
"What we do know," said Brazilian-born theologian Leonardo Boff, "is that he's a North American with a Latin American soul."

Roger Haight, SJ died today. At @orbisbooks.bsky.social
we published 9 of his books, beginning with his controversial "Jesus Symbol of God." Our final meeting was last year when I presented him with a copy of his final book, "FACING RACE." Appropriately, he died on Juneteenth. RIP.

10 years ago on June 17 2015, a young white supremacist, hoping to “ignite a race war,” opened fire at a prayer service at Mother Emmanuel Church in Charleston SC, killing the pastor and eight other members of the African American congregation. My reflection in @giveusthisdaylp.bsky.social

In 2023, FPF honored our dear friend by carrying the torch for two of the causes he championed most — reform of the U.S. government’s secrecy system and unconstitutional abuse of the Espionage Act — through the creation of the Daniel Ellsberg chair on government secrecy.

Today marks the second anniversary of the passing of legendary whistleblower, anti-war hero, and FPF co-founder Daniel Ellsberg.

His courageous decision to leak the Pentagon Papers to the press in 1971 led to the most important Supreme Court case for press freedom in the century.
