A textbook image I did a few years ago showing a trap-jaw ant (Odontomachus rixosus) with her mandibles held open and trigger hairs forward, and then in the closed position.

The snapping shut of the trap is one of the fastest measured animal movements.
A split-screen image showing (top) a face view of an elongated ant standing on a reflective surfave, facing us with toothy brown jaws held 180 degrees open, and (bottom), the same ant with jaws closed, the bluntly toothed tips held together.

I kinda hate it that whenever something gets attention, in whatever form, it will somehow be exploited for monetary gains. It wasn't like that so much with forums in the early days of the internet, but I guess the sheer volume of data requires (and allows for abuse of) monetization. Ugh.

Hm. What would be the point of the donation? I interpreted your suggestion as such. I'm all for voluntary donation (think Wikipedia). But it's not a reliable business model, and given that some multimillionaire is running this place, they'll probably have other plans for it in the long run?

250.000 people is a huge number in any case, but bear in mind that the Netherlands has a population of about 17 million people, and Amsterdam is not a huge city either. This is a massive statement.

Good to see that 250.000 people marched the streets of Amsterdam today. It's a clear sign that the people are done with this, have been done with this for a long time! Governments must act to end this genocidal madness.

Massaal Rode Lijn-protest in Amsterdam, organisatie telt 250.000 betogers
Amsterdam stroomde vol met mensen in rode kleding, protestborden en vlaggen. "Meer dan 1 procent van de hele Nederlandse bevolking staat hier nu."

We are alarmed by reports that Germany is on the verge of a catastrophic about-face, reversing its longstanding and principled opposition to the EU’s Chat Control proposal which, if passed, could spell the end of the right to privacy in Europe. signal.org/blog/pdfs/ge...

I think of YouTube, which lately has become extremely horrible to endure on the free version of the platform. Not just with ads becoming so horrible and completely off target, but also in apparently paying creators so little that they have to sell whatever snake oil they can to be able to continue.
robinheinennl.bsky.social
Usually it incentivizes making the free version extremely crap, and the paid version 'normal'. It's only a matter of time before bad ads are rolled out here, a business with no business model is also not realistic, unfortunately.

Seems to me that forest restoration should be for the sake of forest restoration, not for the sake of compensation for continued destruction. If that's the purpose, it better be a lot of successful compensation. Not that lousy shit we see too often...

The sixth paper out in the issue is our own work by my mentee Senén during a student project. Using plasticine caterpillars to measure predation rates from Apr-Nov 2024, he showed that arthropods and small mammals were more active away from light, but slugs were unresponsive. doi.org/10.1016/j.bi...
