Disabled people have been warning for years that the pandemic response (or lack thereof) was going to lead to fascism

We begged you to wear a mask. To fight for clean air. To refuse “the vulnerable” aside just because you wanted to to “back to normal”

To write this @newstatesman.com column, I asked colleagues about their enduring memories of working on Covid wards.

Their messages, sent as voicenotes, had one thing in common: each respondent broke down in tears.

What does that rawness mean for today's NHS? 🧵

NHS staff are still traumatised by the pandemic
Despite their continuing levels of severe distress, funding has now been withdrawn from mental health hubs.

Isn't this what money was invented for?
Trade deficit. I have bought food from say, Chilis. They have never bought food from me.

There is a trade deficit with Chilis. I’m still doing fine.

The trade deficit argument SOUNDS compelling, but it’s a straw man with no relevancy

Cost of greed crisis
There is no Cost of Living Crisis.

Supermarkets have permanently quadrupled their profits.
Energy Companies have permanently x10ed their profits.

It is a Cost of Greed Crisis and it needs to be reversed.

#DisabilityBenefits cuts will cost more in every way.

“For every pound that someone loses in benefits, you know that – if a council has to step in to cover the shortfall – it’s about £1.50 additional impact”- Disability Policy Centre.

The govt is basing its decisions on an erroneous version of the medical model - i.e. that disability is located in the person, rather than adopting a social model approach which recognises how a lack of societal adjustments and supports creates/exacerbates disablement.

I'll tell you what does drive people to despair: money worries. The idea that you can improve someone's mental health by giving them more money worries should be an obvious mistake of thinking. But it isn't. Because years of right wing rhetoric has made it impossible to see people's needs clearly

The UK, a place where mental illness which is real, is fake.

But greed which is very real and the biggest problem, is great and needs to be fed and kept completely tax free.

Of course it's not poverty that's the issue.
It's never poverty, or we might actually have to do something about poverty.

Throughout history, countries biggest growth were times when they invested in workers.
If you cut health and welfare, how can you possibly expect anything to get done?

Important: The Institute for Fiscal Studies has just published a report saying that more people are claiming disability benefits “because more people are suffering from mental health problems” with evidence to that effect. This a vital counter to insinuations it’s suggestibility.
